Bold, sculptural, and full of tropical flair, Alocasia macrorrhiza ‘Splash’ is a rare and highly sought-after variety known for its striking marbled variegation. Each huge, heart-shaped leaf features a unique pattern of creamy white and pale green splashes across deep green foliage. A true statement plant that thrives in bright, warm, and humid spaces.

Scientific Name
Alocasia macrorrhiza – cultivar: ‘Splash’

Synonyms
Variegated Giant Taro, Elephant Ear ‘Splash’, Alocasia ‘Splash’ (horticultural name)

Common Name(s)
Splash Alocasia, Variegated Elephant Ear

Origin
Native species originates from Southeast Asia and the Philippines; cultivar developed through selective propagation

Light
Bright, indirect light is best – too little light will reduce variegation, while direct sun can scorch the leaves. Avoid deep shade.

Water
Keep the soil evenly moist during the growing season. Allow the top inch to dry slightly between waterings. Do not let it sit in water – ensure good drainage.

Humidity
Loves high humidity (60%+). Use a humidifier, pebble tray, or mist regularly to keep leaf edges from browning.

Soil
Plant in a rich, airy, well-draining mix – a blend of compost, orchid bark, and perlite is ideal. Avoid heavy soils that retain water.

Food
Feed every 2–4 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Reduce feeding in autumn and stop during dormancy in winter.

Temp
Prefers warm conditions – 18–28°C is ideal. Keep away from cold draughts and protect from temperatures below 15°C.

Pet-safe
Toxic if ingested – keep out of reach of pets and children.

Sprouts Top Tips
If your Alocasia drops a few leaves, don’t panic – they often shed older growth to focus on new leaves. Just check the roots and rhizome are healthy and adjust care as needed.

Extra
This cultivar is highly variable – no two leaves will have the same variegation pattern, making each plant beautifully unique.

Did You Know?
The species name macrorrhiza means “large root” in Greek – referencing the plant’s thick, tuberous base that stores water and energy between growth cycles.
