A bold and majestic presence for any indoor space, Philodendron bipinnatifidum ‘Choco Empress’ is a richly toned cultivar of the classic tree philodendron. Its deeply lobed, leathery leaves emerge in warm bronze and chocolate shades before maturing to a lush, glossy green. Each leaf is full of dramatic texture and tropical flair, making this plant a standout choice for bright corners or statement pots. With the right care, it forms a tall, self-heading rosette on thick, woody stems – full of strength and sophistication.

Scientific Name
Philodendron bipinnatifidum ‘Choco Empress’
(bipinnatifidum = “twice-feathered,” describing the intricate lobing of the leaves)

Common Name
Choco Empress Philodendron, Tree Philodendron, Split-Leaf Philodendron (Choco)

Origin
Species native to South America, especially Brazil, Argentina, and Bolivia. ‘Choco Empress’ is a cultivated variety selected for its rich colouring and bold leaf shape.

Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. It will tolerate lower light but grows more vigorously in a well-lit spot. Avoid strong direct sun, which can scorch the younger leaves.

Water
Water when the top 5–7 cm of soil feels dry. Keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy. Reduce watering slightly in the cooler months, and ensure excellent drainage to prevent root rot.

Humidity
Enjoys moderate to high humidity. It will tolerate standard indoor conditions but appreciates misting or a pebble tray in drier environments.

Soil
Use a rich, airy, well-draining potting mix, ideally one designed for aroids – containing bark, compost, perlite, and coco coir for structure and moisture control.

Food
Feed every 4–6 weeks in spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Pause feeding in winter when growth slows.

Temperature
Thrives between 18–26°C. Keep away from cold draughts and protect from temperatures below 13°C.

Pet-safe
No – Philodendron species are toxic if ingested by pets or humans.
