With creamy-white marbled edges swirling into rich green centres, Peperomia obtusifolia ‘Obtipan Bicolor’ is a vibrant, variegated cultivar of the much-loved Baby Rubber Plant. Its thick, glossy leaves have a soft, succulent-like texture and grow in a compact, upright form – perfect for desks, side tables, or grouped with other foliage favourites. Low-maintenance and full of personality, it brings a bright, modern look to any space without demanding much in return.
Scientific Name
Peperomia obtusifolia ‘Obtipan Bicolor’ (obtusifolia = “blunt-leaved”; ‘Obtipan Bicolor’ = patented variegated cultivar with dual-toned foliage)
Synonyms
Peperomia ‘Bicolor’, Variegated Baby Rubber Plant
Common Name
Variegated Baby Rubber Plant, Peperomia ‘Obtipan Bicolor’
Origin
Species native to Central and South America. This cultivar is a nursery-developed variety bred for ornamental foliage and ease of care.
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light to maintain its strong variegation. Will tolerate medium light, but too little may cause the creamy edges to fade. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch the leaves.
Water
Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry. Like other Peperomias, it stores moisture in its leaves and prefers to dry out slightly between waterings. Avoid overwatering or letting it sit in soggy soil.
Humidity
Tolerates normal indoor humidity well. In very dry environments (especially near radiators), occasional misting or grouping with other plants can help.
Soil
Use a light, free-draining potting mix – a standard indoor houseplant compost with added perlite or grit works well. Avoid heavy, moisture-retaining mixes.
Food
Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced, diluted houseplant fertiliser. No feeding is needed in autumn and winter.
Temperature
Ideal temperature range is 18–24°C. Protect from cold draughts and avoid temperatures below 15°C.
Pet-safe
Yes – Peperomia species are non-toxic to pets and humans.
Sprouts Top Tips
If stems become leggy, pinch them back to encourage a bushier shape. Clean the variegated leaves gently with a damp cloth to keep them bright and dust-free.
Add a Pot & Care Essentials
Most customers add a pot or soil when purchasing this plant. This was part of my second order from Sprouts and, once again, the customer service was exceptional. Two of the plants I ordered were out of stock, but I was emailed immediately and given excellent options. However, this little beauty was still available, and what an absolute delight she is! Very strong and healthy, as all my plants from Sprouts have been, and so carefully packed that not a leaf was lost. Bonus points for the team's commitment to sustainability, too. Thank you, lovely people!
My second order from Sprouts, and I can't recommend them enough. Really nice comms from the staff, who are super-helpful, and their plants are always so strong and healthy, extremely carefully wrapped, and sent in repurposed boxes. They have pretty strong 'green' credentials, too, with a lot of UK-grown plants in their shop! This plant is absolutely stunning and arrived in beautiful condition. Absolutely delighted.
