A compact and architectural perennial, Eryngium planum ‘Blue Hobbit’ forms tight clumps of spiny, silvery-green foliage and produces short, upright stems topped with vivid steel-blue flower heads in summer. These thistle-like blooms are long-lasting, both in the garden and as dried flowers, adding bold texture and colour to borders, gravel gardens, and pollinator-friendly planting schemes.

Eryngium planum ‘Blue Hobbit’, commonly known as Dwarf Sea Holly, is a dwarf variety of the popular Eryngium planum, offering all the drama of traditional sea hollies in a smaller, neater form – perfect for the front of borders or container planting.

Perennial

Clump-forming, Flowering, Summer Interest

Flowers: July–September

Foliage: Spring–Autumn

Scientific Name
Eryngium planum ‘Blue Hobbit’ (from Greek eryngion, an ancient name for the plant; planum = flat, referring to its growth habit)

Common Name
Dwarf Sea Holly, Blue Hobbit Sea Holly

Origin
Species native to central and eastern Europe; this is a cultivated dwarf variety

Pruning Tips
Leave seed heads for winter interest and wildlife value. Cut back old stems in early spring before new growth begins.

Wildlife Value
Highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Excellent nectar plant for sunny gardens.

Positioning
Full sun is essential. Thrives in hot, dry spots – ideal for gravel gardens, borders, and containers.

Water
Very drought-tolerant once established. Water occasionally during prolonged dry spells, but avoid overwatering.

Soil
Requires well-drained soil – thrives in sandy or stony soils. Avoid heavy or wet ground. Tolerates poor soil.

Food
No feeding required in most soils. Avoid rich fertilisers which can encourage floppy growth.

Pet-safe
Non-toxic and safe for pets.

Sprouts Top Tips
Perfect for dry, sunny spots where little else thrives – and a great choice for cutting gardens or dried arrangements, as the spiky blooms hold their shape and colour beautifully.
