This flashy lipstick plant stands out thanks to its stunning variegation. Each mid-green leaf is brushed and speckled with bright white variegation, contrasting with red-tinted stems and, when it flowers, with the distinctive, bright red tubular flowers that give this genus the common name 'Lipstick Plant'. This plant looks best in a hanging pot or trailing from a high shelf thanks to its lovely dangling stems. For best growth, give it a couple of hours of morning or evening sun, and make sure it's bright the rest of the day.
Scientific Name
Aeschynanthus pulcher ‘Variegatus’ (beautiful disgraced flower, cultivar: variegated)
Synonyms: Aeschynanthus lobbianus, Trichosporum pulchrum, Aeschynanthus beccarii, Aeschynanthus blumei, Aeschynanthus boschianus, Aeschynanthus candidus, Aeschynanthus intermedius, Trichosporum lobbianum, Trichosporum zollingeri, Trichosporum javanicum, Trichosporum parvifolium (amongst others)
Though still often sold as A. lobbianus, this is now known to be genetically identical to A. pulcher and, as that was the earlier name published, in 1838, it is now the accepted name for this species.
Common Name
Variegated Lipstick Plant, Variegated Lipstick Vine
Origin
This species is native to Borneo, Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam
Light
Keep this plant well-lit in bright but indirect light; a couple of hours of morning or evening sun would be perfect, but much more will scorch the plant so do keep an eye on just how much sun your plant gets.
Water
Make sure the top couple of inches of soil have dried before you water again. You can also tell that this plant is thirsty by feeling the weight of the pot - if it feels surprisingly light, it's probably time to water. If it's really thirsty, the leaves will start to look wrinkly - but try not to let it get this far.
Humidity
High humidity is key here - make sure it's not somewhere excessively dry, and introduce a humidity tray if it's in a dry spot. You can mist regularly, but take care that the water doesn't sit constantly in the foliage as this can cause issues in the long term.
Soil
Requires a well-draining, airy soil mix suited to epiphytes. Orchid or Anthurium potting mixes are ideal. Repot only when necessary, as this plant blooms best when slightly potbound, usually needing a new pot every two years in spring.
Food
Feed every four waters during summer, reduce to every six in autumn and winter as growth slows.
Temperature
Prefers room temperatures between 18-26°C. Keep above 15°C in winter to avoid stress.
Pet-safe
Yes, but it’s best kept out of reach of pets to prevent over-nibbling, which can stress the plant.
Sprouts Top Tips
Balance is key for the Lipstick Plant. Its natural rainforest habitat means it needs both humidity and airflow. Avoid waterlogging and ensure it has sufficient light. Watch for yellowing leaves (sign of overwatering), crisp leaf edges (indicating too much sun or low humidity), and mildew (suggesting excess moisture or low light).
