Every leaf is uniquely patterned, making each plant one of a kind. With warmth, bright indirect light and consistent moisture, this eye-catching Caladium will reward you with continuous colourful growth.
Scientific Name
Caladium ‘Fire Phoenix’
Common Name
Angel Wings, Elephant Ear
Origin
Caladiums are native to the tropical rainforests of South America, particularly Brazil, where they grow beneath the forest canopy. ‘Fire Phoenix’ is a cultivated ornamental variety selected for its striking foliage.
Light
Thrives in bright, indirect light. Too much direct sun can scorch the delicate leaves, while insufficient light may reduce the intensity of the foliage colours.
Water
Keep the compost lightly moist throughout the growing season, allowing only the very top of the soil to dry between waterings. Reduce watering as the plant naturally begins to enter dormancy in autumn.
Humidity
Loves high humidity and appreciates a warm, humid environment. Avoid placing near radiators or cold draughts, and consider using a pebble tray or humidifier if your home is particularly dry.
Soil
Use a rich, well-draining houseplant compost with added perlite to retain moisture while allowing excess water to drain freely.
Food
Feed every two to four weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser. Stop feeding once the plant begins to die back for dormancy.
Temperature
Prefers temperatures between 18–30°C and should never be exposed to temperatures below 15°C.
Pet-safe
No. Caladiums are toxic to cats, dogs and humans if ingested, as they contain calcium oxalate crystals which can cause irritation of the mouth and digestive system.
Sprouts Top Tips
Don’t be alarmed if your Caladium begins to die back in autumn—this is completely natural. The tuber is simply entering its dormant period. Reduce watering, allow the foliage to die back naturally, and keep the tuber warm and dry over winter. With warmth and regular watering in spring, it will burst back into life with a fresh flush of spectacular leaves.
