Masses of star-shaped pure white flowers cascade gracefully over soft green foliage from late spring through summer, creating a beautiful display in hanging baskets, containers, and raised planters. Campanula isophylla ‘Atlanta White’ produces an abundance of blooms over a long season, making it a wonderful choice for brightening patios, balconies, and cottage-style gardens.

Campanula isophylla ‘Atlanta White’, commonly known as Italian Bellflower, is a charming flowering perennial often grown as a patio plant or seasonal container feature in the UK. Its trailing habit and prolific flowering make it particularly attractive when allowed to spill naturally over the edges of pots and baskets. Despite its delicate appearance, it is surprisingly easy to grow and rewards gardeners with months of elegant blooms.

Flowers: May to September
Foliage: April to October

Scientific Name
Campanula isophylla ‘Atlanta White’ (equal-leaved bellflower)

Common Name
Italian Bellflower
Trailing Bellflower

Origin
The species Campanula isophylla is native to northern Italy, where it grows naturally on rocky cliffs and mountainous slopes. ‘Atlanta White’ is a cultivated variety selected for its pure white flowers and vigorous flowering habit.

Pruning Tips
Deadhead faded flowers regularly to encourage continuous blooming. Lightly trim back overly long stems after flowering to maintain a compact, tidy shape and encourage fresh growth.

Wildlife Value
The open flowers provide nectar for bees and other pollinating insects, particularly when grown outdoors in sunny positions.

Positioning
Thrives in full sun or partial shade. Ideal for containers, hanging baskets, window boxes, raised planters, and the front of borders. In colder parts of the UK, some winter protection may be beneficial.

Water
Keep compost evenly moist during the growing season, allowing the surface to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid prolonged waterlogging, which can lead to root problems.

Soil
Prefers fertile, well-drained soil or a good quality peat-free container compost. Good drainage is essential, especially during winter.

Food
Feed every two weeks with a balanced liquid fertiliser during the flowering season to encourage continuous blooming and healthy growth.

Pet-safe
Generally regarded as non-toxic to cats, dogs, and horses.

Sprouts Top Tips
Position containers where the trailing stems can spill naturally over the edges. This creates the most impressive display and showcases the masses of white flowers to their full effect.

Did You Know?
The genus name Campanula comes from the Latin word campana, meaning “little bell”, referring to the bell-shaped flowers that characterise many species within the group. The species name isophylla means “equal-leaved”, describing the plant’s evenly sized leaves.
