Spikes of rich deep violet-blue flowers rise above neat mounds of aromatic green foliage from early summer onwards, creating a bold splash of colour that pollinators adore. Compact and free flowering, Salvia nemorosa ‘Sensation Deep Blue’ is perfect for borders, gravel gardens, containers, and wildlife-friendly planting schemes. Its upright flower spikes add structure and movement while providing months of colour with minimal maintenance.
Salvia nemorosa ‘Sensation Deep Blue’, commonly known as Woodland Sage, is a reliable and easy-to-grow perennial that offers exceptional garden performance. Its intense flower colour contrasts beautifully with softer pinks, whites, and silvers, making it a favourite in cottage gardens and contemporary planting alike. Fully hardy and drought tolerant once established, it is an excellent choice for sunny gardens.
Perennial
Herbaceous, Compact, Long Flowering, Pollinator Friendly
Flowers: June to September
Foliage: March to November
Scientific Name
Salvia nemorosa ‘Sensation Deep Blue’ (woodland sage)
Common Name
Woodland Sage
Balkan Clary
Origin
The species Salvia nemorosa is native to central and eastern Europe and western Asia, where it grows in grasslands, open woodland margins, and sunny slopes. ‘Sensation Deep Blue’ is a cultivated selection chosen for its compact habit and richly coloured flowers.
Pruning Tips
Remove spent flower spikes regularly to encourage repeat flowering throughout the summer. After the first main flush of blooms, cut plants back by around one third to promote fresh growth and a second display of flowers.
Wildlife Value
An outstanding plant for pollinators. The nectar-rich flowers attract bees, bumblebees, butterflies, hoverflies, and other beneficial insects throughout the flowering season.
Positioning
Thrives in full sun and performs best in open, well-lit positions. Ideal for borders, gravel gardens, prairie-style planting, wildlife gardens, and containers.
Water
Water regularly during establishment. Once established, it is drought tolerant and generally only requires watering during prolonged dry periods.
Soil
Prefers well-drained soil and grows well in sandy, chalky, or loamy conditions. Avoid heavy, waterlogged soils, particularly during winter.
Food
Apply a balanced fertiliser or mulch with garden compost in spring. Excessive feeding is unnecessary and may encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowers.
Pet-safe
Generally regarded as non-toxic to cats, dogs, and horses.
Sprouts Top Tips
Pair with ornamental grasses, echinaceas, yarrow, and hardy geraniums for a long-lasting summer display that is packed with pollinator appeal and colour.
Did You Know?
The genus name Salvia comes from the Latin salvare, meaning “to heal” or “to save”, reflecting the long history of sages being used in traditional herbal medicine. While ornamental salvias are grown primarily for their flowers, they still retain the aromatic foliage characteristic of the group.
