A striking, richly coloured orchid known for its deep red, velvety blooms and elegant sprays of flowers. Oncidopsis Nelly Isler ‘Red Velvet’ is part of the Oncidium alliance, often grouped under “Cambria orchids,” and is loved for being more forgiving than many other orchids. With the right care, it will reward you with long-lasting flowers and repeat blooms throughout the year.
Scientific Name
× Oncidopsis Nelly Isler (‘Red Velvet’) (hybrid orchid in the Oncidium alliance)
Synonyms
Often sold as Cambria orchid or incorrectly labelled under other Oncidium alliance hybrids.
Common Name
Cambria Orchid, Nelly Isler Orchid
Origin
A cultivated hybrid derived from orchids native to Central and South America.
Light
Bright, indirect light is ideal. Avoid direct sunlight, especially in summer, as it can scorch the leaves. A bright windowsill with filtered light works well.
Water
Water when the top of the growing medium feels just dry to the touch. These orchids prefer to dry slightly between waterings but should not stay dry for long periods. Reduce watering in winter.
Humidity
Prefers moderate to higher humidity. If your home is dry, especially in winter, place on a pebble tray or near other plants to increase humidity.
Soil
Use a specialist orchid bark mix that allows for excellent drainage and airflow around the roots. Never use standard potting compost.
Food
Feed every 2–3 waters during the growing season with a diluted orchid fertiliser. Reduce feeding in winter.
Temperature
Thrives in typical indoor temperatures between 16–24°C. Avoid cold drafts and sudden temperature drops.
Pet-safe
Generally considered non-toxic, but best kept out of reach of pets and children.
Sprouts Top Tips
After flowering, cut the flower spike back to the base to encourage the plant to focus on new growth and future blooms.
Extras
Unlike some orchids, Cambrias do not like to stay constantly wet. Good airflow and drainage are key to keeping roots healthy.
Did You Know?
Cambria orchids are not a true genus but a group of complex hybrids bred for their vibrant colours and easier care compared to traditional orchids like Phalaenopsis.
