Aglaonema ‘Beautiful Red’ is a striking tropical houseplant admired for its vibrant foliage and rich, colourful markings. Its broad, glossy leaves feature beautiful shades of red, pink and green, creating an eye-catching display that brings warmth and colour to any indoor space. With its naturally bushy growth habit and relatively easy-going nature, this colourful Chinese Evergreen makes a wonderful addition to shelves, side tables and houseplant collections.
Scientific Name
Aglaonema ‘Beautiful Red’
Common Name(s)
Beautiful Red Chinese Evergreen, Red Aglaonema, Chinese Evergreen
Origin
A cultivated ornamental variety of Aglaonema, a genus native to tropical and subtropical regions of Southeast Asia and surrounding areas. These plants naturally grow beneath the forest canopy in warm, humid environments.
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light to maintain its vibrant red colouring. It can tolerate moderate light levels, although growth may slow and the foliage may become greener in lower-light conditions. Avoid prolonged strong direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
Water
Allow the top few centimetres of compost to dry between waterings, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away. Aglaonemas prefer slightly moist soil during active growth but dislike sitting in waterlogged compost. Reduce watering during autumn and winter.
Humidity
Prefers moderate to high humidity, ideally around 50–70%, but generally adapts well to average household conditions. Keep away from radiators and cold draughts, which can cause brown leaf edges.
Soil
Use a well-draining, peat-free houseplant mix with added perlite and fine orchid bark. The compost should retain a little moisture while allowing plenty of airflow around the roots.
Food
Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser diluted to half strength. Reduce or stop feeding during autumn and winter when growth slows.
Temperature
Prefers warm temperatures between 18–27°C. Protect from cold draughts, sudden temperature changes and prolonged temperatures below 15°C.
Pet-safe
No. Aglaonemas contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that can cause irritation to the mouth and digestive system if ingested. Keep out of reach of cats, dogs and children.
Sprouts Top Tips
Give your ‘Beautiful Red’ plenty of bright, indirect light to encourage its rich red and pink colouring. Too little light may cause the colourful markings to become less pronounced.
Avoid overwatering and allow the upper layer of compost to dry before watering again. Gently wipe the leaves with a damp cloth occasionally to remove dust and keep their glossy appearance.
Extras
‘Beautiful Red’ develops a naturally compact, bushy growth habit, producing new leaves from the centre of the plant as it matures. Its colourful foliage makes it particularly attractive when displayed alongside darker green houseplants.
Mature plants may occasionally produce small, pale flowers consisting of a spadix surrounded by a spathe, similar to those found on Peace Lilies. These are relatively inconspicuous compared with the vibrant foliage.
Did You Know?
Aglaonemas have been cultivated as ornamental houseplants for generations, but modern breeding has introduced an incredible range of colourful varieties featuring shades of red, pink, silver, cream and green.
The name Aglaonema comes from Greek words meaning ‘bright’ and ‘thread’, a reference to the plant’s floral structures.
