Origin
An undescribed Alocasia species believed to be native to North Sulawesi, Indonesia, where it grows beneath the rainforest canopy in warm, humid conditions.
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. Plenty of filtered light encourages strong growth and well-defined foliage, while direct afternoon sun can scorch the leaves. Lower light levels may result in slower growth and smaller leaves.
Water
Water thoroughly when the top 2–3 cm of compost feels dry. Keep the compost lightly moist during the growing season but avoid allowing it to become waterlogged, as the roots are susceptible to rot. Reduce watering during the cooler months when growth slows.
Humidity
Enjoys high humidity (60% or above). While it can adapt to average indoor humidity, higher levels help produce larger leaves and minimise brown leaf edges.
Temperature
Thrives between 18–28°C. Protect from temperatures below 15°C, cold draughts and sudden fluctuations.
Soil
Grow in a free-draining aroid compost containing peat-free compost, orchid bark, perlite and a small amount of horticultural charcoal. This provides excellent aeration while retaining enough moisture around the roots.
Feeding
Feed every 2–4 weeks throughout spring and summer using a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser at half strength. Pause feeding during autumn and winter.
Growth Habit
An upright, clump-forming Alocasia with elongated, narrow foliage that develops from a central stem. Given the right conditions, it can reach approximately 60–90 cm tall, with each new leaf becoming larger and more dramatic as the plant matures.
Toxicity
Toxic if eaten by pets and humans due to calcium oxalate crystals. Keep out of reach of children and animals.
