Soil Mix Recommendation

A truly unusual and collector-worthy Anthurium, Anthurium peltigerum is admired for its distinctive peltate leaves, where the stem attaches to the underside of the leaf rather than the edge. This gives the foliage a beautifully shield-like appearance, with soft, rounded forms and elegant veining. Its unique structure makes it a standout in any plant collection, especially for those drawn to more botanical, less conventional houseplants.

Scientific Name
Anthurium peltigerum (shield-bearing Anthurium, referring to its peltate leaf structure

Common Name
Peltate Anthurium

Origin
Native to tropical regions of Central and South America, where it grows as an epiphyte or terrestrial plant in humid rainforest environments

Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch the delicate leaves. Lower light is tolerated but may slow growth

Water
Keep the soil lightly moist but never soggy. Allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings. Reduce watering in winter while maintaining some moisture

Humidity
Thrives in higher humidity. Ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, or near a humidifier. A pebble tray can also help maintain moisture in the air

Soil
Use a loose, well-draining aroid mix with bark, perlite, and organic matter to mimic its natural growing conditions

Food
Feed every 2–4 weeks during the growing season with a diluted balanced fertiliser. Reduce feeding in winter

Temperature
Prefers warm temperatures between 18–28°C. Avoid temperatures below 15°C and protect from cold drafts

Pet-safe
Toxic if ingested, so keep out of reach of pets and children

Sprouts Top Tips
This plant loves airflow as much as humidity – a chunky, breathable soil mix and a well-ventilated spot will help prevent root issues and keep it thriving.
