As the name suggests, Begonia rex ‘Silver Jewel’ is a true gem in any indoor plant collection. Its leaves are boldly patterned with shimmering silver, edged in deep green, and often flushed with hints of burgundy along the veins. With its rich colour contrast and elegant spiral form, this compact variety adds a sophisticated sparkle to terrariums, shelves, and plant displays.

Scientific Name
Begonia rex ‘Silver Jewel’ (from Latin rex, “king” – denoting the showy, ornamental nature of this species group)

Begonia rex hybrids stem from species collected in Assam, India, during the 19th century. ‘Silver Jewel’ is a modern cultivar selected for its silver-dominant foliage and compact growth habit, bred for ornamental use indoors.

Common Name(s)
Silver Jewel Begonia, Rex Begonia

Origin
Cultivar bred from Begonia rex species native to northeast India and surrounding subtropical regions

Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sun, which may scorch the leaves. Low light will reduce leaf colour intensity and slow growth.

Water
Water when the top 2–3cm of soil feels dry. Keep the soil lightly moist, not wet. Reduce watering in winter. Avoid wetting the crown or leaves directly.

Humidity
Moderate to high humidity is best. Avoid direct misting – use a pebble tray or humidifier to maintain leaf health and prevent crispy edges.

Soil
Use a light, airy, free-draining mix. A blend of houseplant compost, perlite, and orchid bark or leaf mould works well. Repot every 1–2 years in spring to refresh soil and give room to grow.

Food
Feed every 4–6 weeks in the growing season (spring and summer) with a diluted balanced fertiliser. Hold off in winter when growth slows.

Temp
Ideal range is 18–24°C. Keep away from cold draughts and never expose to temperatures below 15°C.

Pet-safe
Toxic if ingested – keep out of reach of pets and children.

Sprouts Top Tips
To maintain compact, healthy growth, remove faded leaves and rotate regularly for even light exposure. Keep the crown dry to avoid rot.

Extras
‘Silver Jewel’ is particularly suited to indoor plant styling thanks to its smaller size and eye-catching tones – it pairs well with dark-leaved plants for contrast.

Did You Know?
The shimmering silver tones of this variety aren’t just decorative – they help reflect light in its native forest floor habitat, giving the plant a clever adaptive edge.
