An extraordinary foliage begonia prized for its dramatic metallic silver patterning, Begonia ‘Temuyuk Silver’ is a true collector’s plant. Its textured leaves feature shimmering silver tones layered over deep olive and charcoal markings, creating an almost camouflage like appearance that changes beautifully depending on the light. The foliage has a sculptural quality that makes this begonia a real statement piece in terrariums, cabinets, or curated indoor plant collections.
This striking rhizomatous begonia thrives in warm, humid conditions and is especially loved by collectors of rare tropical foliage. Although it looks exotic and delicate, it can grow very well indoors when given stable humidity and gentle care.
Scientific Name
Begonia ‘Temuyuk Silver’ (cultivar begonia)
Common Name
Temuyuk Silver Begonia
Origin
A cultivated begonia believed to originate from species native to Borneo, selected for its heavily silvered foliage and dramatic markings.
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch the foliage and reduce the intensity of the silver patterning. Lower light levels may soften leaf colour and contrast.
Water
Keep the soil lightly moist but never waterlogged. Allow the top layer of soil to begin drying slightly between waterings. Reduce watering during cooler months.
Humidity
Thrives in moderate to high humidity, ideally above 60%. Excellent for terrariums, indoor cabinets, or naturally humid rooms. Avoid placing near heaters or cold draughts.
Soil
Use a light, airy, free draining mix rich in organic matter. A blend containing fine bark, perlite, sphagnum moss, and coco coir works especially well.
Food
Feed every 2 to 4 waters during spring and summer using a diluted balanced houseplant fertiliser. Reduce feeding during autumn and winter.
Temp
Prefers temperatures between 18–26°C. Protect from temperatures below 15°C and avoid sudden drops in temperature.
Pet-safe
Toxic if ingested, so keep away from pets and children.
Sprouts Top Tips
Consistent humidity helps this begonia produce larger, more intensely silvered leaves. Sudden dryness can cause crisping around the edges or distorted new growth.
Extras
The metallic silver sheen can appear almost reflective under soft lighting, making this one of the most eye catching foliage begonias for display cabinets and terrariums.
Did You Know?
Many rare begonias from Borneo evolved their dramatic leaf textures and metallic colouring to help capture and reflect limited light beneath dense rainforest canopies.
