Scientific Name
Bletilla striata (Blet's little striped plant)
Common Name
Chinese Ground Orchid, Purple Hardy Orchid, White Hardy Orchid, Hyacinth Orchid, Common Bletilla
Origin
Originating in Eastern Asia, this orchid is native to China, Japan, Korea and Myanmar.
Pruning Tips
Pruning isn't totally necessary, but you can trim back withered leaves in autumn or in late winter.
Wildlife Value
Bletilla orchids are attractive to pollinators but won't offer much food to pollinators as they are thought to be rewardless (i.e. not containing nectar for pollinators)
Positioning
Grow in partial shade, in a spot sheltered from the wind.
Water
Keep soil moist but make sure it drains well so the plant isn't sat in a puddle. Water in dry weather, especially while the plant is blooming to keep the flowers looking fresh.
Soil
Flexible with soil type as long as it drains well and won't keep your orchid's roots too soggy.
Food
Will benefit from a feed in spring and summer, ideally with a balanced orchid feed. Adding some compost or leaf mold to the soil around the plant will also help up its nutrient value.
Pet-safe
Yes - this plant is non-toxic, although munching larger quantities can cause stomach upset.
Sprouts Top Tips
Make sure the plant doesn't dry out when it's blooming or the flowers won't last as long. A layer of mulch in winter can help keep it warmer and also add some nutrients ready for spring.
