Codiaeum ‘Gold’ is a striking tropical houseplant admired for its vibrant foliage and beautiful golden-yellow markings. Its glossy leaves feature a wonderful combination of rich green and bright yellow, creating a colourful, almost painted appearance. With its upright, bushy growth habit and bold tropical character, this eye-catching Croton is perfect for bringing a splash of sunshine to bright indoor spaces.
Scientific Name
Codiaeum variegatum ‘Gold’ (horticultural trade name)
Common Name(s)
Gold Croton, Croton, Garden Croton
Origin
A cultivated ornamental form of Codiaeum variegatum, a species native to tropical regions of Southeast Asia and the western Pacific, including Indonesia, Malaysia and surrounding islands.
Light
Prefers very bright, indirect light with some gentle direct sunlight to maintain its vibrant golden colouring. A position near an east or west-facing window is ideal. Too little light can cause the foliage to become greener and less colourful, while prolonged intense midday sun may scorch the leaves.
Water
Keep the compost lightly moist during active growth, allowing the top few centimetres to dry between waterings. Water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away. Crotons dislike both waterlogged soil and prolonged periods of drought, which can lead to leaf drop. Reduce watering slightly during autumn and winter.
Humidity
Prefers high humidity, ideally around 60% or above. A bright bathroom, kitchen or position near a humidifier can help maintain healthy foliage. Keep away from radiators and drying draughts, which may cause brown leaf edges or leaf drop.
Soil
Use a rich, well-draining, peat-free houseplant mix with added perlite and fine orchid bark. The compost should retain some moisture while allowing excess water to drain away freely.
Food
Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser diluted to half strength. Reduce or stop feeding during autumn and winter when growth slows.
Temperature
Prefers warm temperatures between 18–27°C. Protect from cold draughts, sudden temperature changes and prolonged temperatures below 15°C.
Pet-safe
No. Crotons are toxic to cats and dogs if ingested and may cause irritation or digestive upset. Their milky sap can also irritate sensitive skin, so wear gloves when pruning or repotting.
Sprouts Top Tips
Crotons love consistency. Sudden changes in temperature, light or watering can cause them to drop leaves, so choose a warm, bright position and avoid moving your plant unnecessarily.
Give your ‘Gold’ plenty of bright light to maintain its beautiful yellow markings, and keep the compost evenly moist without allowing it to become waterlogged.
Extras
Gold Crotons develop an upright, branching growth habit and can gradually become substantial indoor plants. Their colourful foliage makes them particularly attractive as statement plants or when displayed alongside darker green houseplants.
Mature plants may occasionally produce small, inconspicuous flowers, although Crotons are primarily grown for their spectacular foliage.
Did You Know?
Despite sharing the common name Croton, Codiaeum variegatum belongs to a different genus from the true Croton plants, although both are members of the Euphorbiaceae family.
The incredible colours found in Croton leaves are produced by a combination of pigments, including chlorophyll and carotenoids, which create their distinctive green, yellow, orange and red markings.
