This plant is really overflowing with lush foliage - literally, as its vines hang down around the plant pot! An epiphyte in its natural habitat, your dischidia will look its best either trained to climb up a structure, in a hanging pot or cascading from a high shelf. The lush, mid-green leaves of this plant are round and curl inwards as it matures, growing from vining stems as they dangle or climb. Keep this plant happy with the right balance of light and moisture, and it'll make you smile in turn with more of its elegant, verdant foliage.

Scientific Name
Dischidia platyphylla (flat-leaved plant with parted crowns)

This species' name has been accepted and undisputed since first publication in 1906.

Common Name
Flat-leaf Dischidia, Paddle-leaf Vine, Shingle Plant

Origin
Native to tropical Southeast Asia, specifically the Philippines.

Light
Prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate some direct morning or evening sun. Too much harsh sunlight may cause leaf scorching, while low light will slow its growth.

Water
Water when the top half of the soil feels dry. In brighter conditions, this may be more frequent, but always let the soil dry partially between waterings to avoid overwatering. Reduce watering in winter.

Humidity
This plant loves humidity and will appreciate a little extra moisture in the air. Using a humidity tray can help, especially in drier seasons or heated indoor spaces.

Soil
Use a loose, well-draining soil mix suitable for epiphytes. A mix containing bark, perlite, and coir, or one designed for Anthuriums or Orchids, is ideal. Repot every few years in spring to refresh the soil.

Food
Feed every four waterings during the growing season, reducing to every six in autumn and winter. Use a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser for best results.

Temperature
Thrives in temperatures between 15-30°C. Protect from draughts and avoid temperatures below 12°C in colder months.

Pet-safe
No, this plant is toxic to pets and small children.

Sprouts Top Tips
This plant's leaves will curl naturally as it matures; however, if they are also wrinkling or looking crispy, your plant may benefit from water a little more frequently.
The most important things to remember here, though, are keeping the plant somewhere bright and in well-draining soil.
