A striking golden form of the classic climbing pothos, Epipremnum pinnatum ‘Cintho Goldfinger’ produces elongated, pointed leaves splashed in vibrant chartreuse and lime tones. As the plant matures and climbs, the foliage can develop dramatic splits and fenestrations, giving it a more architectural, tropical appearance. Easy-going and adaptable, this variety is ideal for shelves, moss poles, or trailing from a hanging planter.
Scientific Name
Epipremnum pinnatum (upon tree trunks, pinnate) ‘Cintho Goldfinger’
Previously confused with and often sold as Scindapsus or Pothos. The genus Epipremnum was formally separated from Scindapsus based on flower structure and botanical differences.
Synonyms
Often incorrectly labelled as Golden Pothos or simply Pothos (though true Golden Pothos is Epipremnum aureum).
Common Name
Goldfinger Pothos, Cintho Goldfinger Pothos, Climbing Pothos
Origin
The species Epipremnum pinnatum is native to Southeast Asia, Papua New Guinea, and northern Australia. This cultivar has been selectively bred for its distinctive golden colouring.
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light to maintain its vibrant colouring. It will tolerate moderate light levels, but growth may slow and variegation can become less intense. Avoid strong, direct midday sun which may scorch the leaves.
Water
Allow the top third to half of the soil to dry out between waterings. Water thoroughly, allowing excess to drain away, and never leave the plant sitting in water. Reduce watering frequency during autumn and winter when growth naturally slows.
Humidity
Enjoys moderate to higher humidity but adapts well to average UK household conditions. If your home is particularly dry – especially in winter with central heating – consider a pebble tray or grouping with other plants.
Soil
Use a free-draining houseplant compost with added bark or perlite for airflow around the roots. Repot every 1–2 years in spring if roots begin to fill the pot.
Food
Feed every 2–4 waters during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser. Reduce feeding in autumn and pause in winter.
Temperature
Ideal temperature range is 18–27°C. Avoid temperatures below 12–15°C and protect from cold draughts.
Pet-safe
Toxic if ingested due to calcium oxalate crystals. Keep out of reach of pets and children.
Sprouts Top Tips
Give it something to climb – like a moss pole or trellis – to encourage larger, more mature leaves with dramatic splits over time.
