With its long, elegant, lance-shaped leaves, Ficus binnendijkii ‘Alii’ is a graceful alternative to the more common Rubber Plant or Fiddle Leaf Fig. Its slender foliage gives it a softer silhouette, and it’s often grown as a small tree or bushy floor plant. Tolerant of a range of indoor conditions, it’s a stylish and relatively low-maintenance addition to the home or office.

Scientific Name
Ficus binnendijkii ‘Alii’ (named in honour of botanist Simon Binnendijk)

Formerly known as Ficus longifolia, this species has undergone reclassification. ‘Alii’ is a cultivated variety, believed to have originated in Hawaii, and is known for its narrower, glossy leaves and more tolerant nature compared to other ficus species.

Common Name(s)
Long Leaf Fig, Banana Leaf Fig, Ficus ‘Alii’

Origin
Species native to Southeast Asia, including Indonesia and the Philippines; cultivar origin likely Hawaiian

Light
Prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate lower light conditions. Avoid direct sun, which may scorch the leaves.

Water
Allow the top 3–5cm of soil to dry out between waterings. Water more frequently in spring and summer, and reduce in winter. Avoid letting it sit in soggy soil, which can lead to root rot.

Humidity
Prefers moderate humidity. Tolerates normal indoor levels but benefits from occasional misting or a nearby humidifier, especially during winter.

Soil
Use a well-draining houseplant mix. A blend of compost, perlite and pine bark is ideal. Repot every 2–3 years to refresh soil and accommodate growth.

Food
Feed monthly in spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Pause feeding during the winter.

Temp
Ideal temperature range is 16–25°C. Protect from sudden temperature drops and cold draughts.

Pet-safe
Toxic if ingested – keep out of reach of pets and children.

Sprouts Top Tips
Once settled, avoid moving the plant too often – changes in environment can cause leaf drop. Wipe leaves regularly to keep them dust-free and glossy.

Extras
Can be grown as a single-stemmed tree or a multi-trunked specimen for a fuller look. Also available as a braided standard form in some nurseries.

Did You Know?
‘Alii’ means “king” or “royalty” in Hawaiian – a fitting name for this stately, upright plant that brings height and poise to any indoor jungle.
