A popular indoor tree with a lush, rounded canopy, Ficus microcarpa ‘Moclame’ is known for its dense, glossy green leaves and elegant upright growth. Compared to its cousin the Fiddle Leaf Fig, ‘Moclame’ is more forgiving and easier to care for, making it a brilliant choice for anyone wanting a statement plant without the fuss.
Scientific Name
Ficus microcarpa ‘Moclame’ (from Latin microcarpa, meaning “small fruit”)
Previously grouped under Ficus retusa in cultivation, this plant is now classified as a cultivar of Ficus microcarpa. It’s sometimes confused with other ornamental figs, but ‘Moclame’ is specifically selected for its neatly oval leaves and compact growth.
Common Name(s)
Ficus ‘Moclame’, Indian Laurel Fig, Laurel Fig
Origin
Species native to Southeast Asia and parts of northern Australia; this cultivar developed for ornamental use
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. Tolerates some lower light conditions but may become sparse. Avoid intense, direct sunlight which can scorch leaves.
Water
Water when the top few centimetres of soil have dried out. Consistent moisture is key – not too dry, not soggy. In winter, reduce frequency slightly.
Humidity
Happy in average household humidity, but will appreciate a mist or pebble tray in drier months.
Soil
Well-draining potting mix is essential. Use a loam-based compost mixed with perlite or bark. Repot every 2–3 years in spring if root-bound.
Food
Feed monthly during the growing season (spring to early autumn) with a general-purpose houseplant fertiliser. Pause feeding in winter.
Temp
Ideal temperature range is 18–25°C. Keep away from cold draughts and avoid temperatures below 13°C.
Pet-safe
Toxic if ingested – keep away from pets and children.
Sprouts Top Tips
Give your Moclame a quarter-turn every few weeks to encourage even, upright growth – it will naturally lean toward the light if left in one spot.
Extras
‘Moclame’ is often trained as a standard tree or shaped into multi-stemmed forms, offering different styles to suit different spaces.
Did You Know?
In the wild, Ficus microcarpa can grow into massive trees with aerial roots and huge canopies – but indoors, ‘Moclame’ remains a well-behaved and compact version of its dramatic outdoor self.
