This climbing shrub adds a splash of colour through winter with its bright yellow, star-shaped flowers. After blooming its bare stems will produce leaves. Hardy throughout the UK down to -15°C.

This deciduous shrub is fantastic for bringing colour to the gloomiest time of year. Adding a pinch of stardust withs it bright yellow blooms from late autumn through to winter, before producing its vibrant green leaves in time for spring. And while it is not evergreen, its stems remain bright green through winter, so even without foliage there is a dart of green as a backdrop for the blooms. You can train this plant against walls or fences, or grow it into an arch; as it does not twine itself, you'll just need to tie it in wherever you want it to grow. Alternatively, it also grows well scrambling over a low wall, or spreading as ground cover.

Deciduous Perennial

Shrub, climbing or creeping.

Flowers: Late autumn, winter, early spring
Foliage Spring to autumn

Scientific Name
Jasminum nudiflorum (jasmine with flowers that come before the leaves)

Common Name
Winter Jasmine, Winter-Flowered Jasmine

Origin
Native to central China and Tibet

Pruning Tips
Prune your Winter Jasmine after flowering in early spring to let it get plenty of new growth in for next year's flowers.

Wildlife Value
As this plant is not native, it isn't beneficial to any native pollinators in particular. However, it is attractive to early-waking pollinators, who can benefit from its blooms in a scarce time of year.

Positioning
Grows in full sun to partial shade, and will do best in a sheltered position.

Water
Your Winter Jasmine may benefit from extra watering in summer dry spells, but will probably get enough water from natural rainfall in winter.

Soil
Make sure the soil is well-draining; Winter Jasmine is flexible with the types of soil it will grow in.

Food
Feed with a balanced fertiliser in early spring and again in midsummer to promote healthy growth and flowering.

Pet-safe
Yes, this plant is not toxic to humans, pets, birds or livestock.

Sprouts Top Tips
Train Winter Jasmine along walls or trellises for height or let it cascade over walls for a natural, informal look. Its adaptable nature also makes it a great choice for covering ground on banks or slopes.

Extras
This plant has been awarded the RHS' prestigious Award of Garden Merit.
