This succulent's long, intricately patterned leaves sprout from a central stem and grow tall; in their natural habitats these plants can grow to over a metre in height! As a houseplant, this one is starting small and with narrow leaves. Each leaf's mid-green colour is covered in patterns not unlike a leopard's print, which tint the leaves a deep maroon. The tips of each leaf separate into miniature fronds like tiny fingers. And if a leaf drops off the main stem, place it onto its own patch of soil and it'll grow roots and become a whole new plant - hence the common name for this Genus, the 'Mother of Thousands'. Adaptable, easygoing and with a dramatic silhouette, this plant is a favourite amongst succulent fanatics and houseplant novices alike.
Scientific Name
Kalanchoe daigremontiana (Daigremont's plant where the parts that fall grow)
Synonyms: Bryophyllum daigremontianum
This plant was first identified in a 1914 paper published in Marseille, and it still has the same scientific name. It has been identified in the interim as a Bryophyllum, but this genus is now incorporated into Kalanchoe.
Common Name(s)
Mother of Thousands, Mexican Hat Plant, Alligator Plant, Devil's Backbone, Chandelier Plant, Maternity Plant, Crocodile Tears
Origin
Native to Southwest Madagascar, in particular the dry zones of the Fiherenana River valley and Androhibolava mountains.
Light
Thrives in bright, indirect light but can tolerate some direct sunlight. Avoid intense midday sun, as it can scorch the leaves; an east- or west-facing window is ideal.
Water
Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water deeply and ensure any excess water drains away. During winter, reduce watering significantly, as the plant goes into a dormant state.
Humidity
Well-adapted to low humidity, this plant is fine in most household humidity conditions. Avoid placing in overly damp environments, which can lead to rot.
Soil
Plant in a well-draining succulent or cactus mix. Added sand or grit helps improve drainage. Repot every 2–3 years or when the plant outgrows its container.
Food
Feed once every few months with a fertiliser designed for cacti and succulents
Temperature
Ideal temperature is between 15-25°C; make sure it does not get colder than 12°C in winter.
Pet-safe
No, this plant is toxic to pets and humans if ingested. Keep it out of reach of children and animals.
Sprouts Top Tips
Mother of Thousands is highly prolific. This plant may produce plantlets along its leaf edges, which can root easily. Keep an eye on your soil or surrounding pots, as these baby plants may start growing wherever they land. Prune the plantlets if you want to control its spread.
Extras
Kalanchoe daigremontiana is monocarpic, meaning it will flower once and then die. However, it produces offsets and plantlets that continue the cycle, ensuring the plant’s survival.
