This fern's beautiful fronds grow on the end of long stems, each leaf displaying a ribbon of bright pale green variegation through the middle. One of the easier types of fern to keep in your home, you can keep this plant beautiful with just a little care! Make sure your specimen is kept plenty moist, and doesn't get too much light, and it will reward you with gorgeous foliage and a happy plant for your home.

Scientific Name
Pteris cretica 'Albolineata' (Cretan wing plant, variety: white-lined)

Common Name
Cretan Brae, Cretan Brake Fern, Ribbon Fern

Origin
Thought to have originated on the island of Crete

Light
A spot close to a north- or east-facing window will be best for this plant. It needs some indirect light to prevent mould, but not too much as this would scorch the leaves.

Water
Your Ribbon Fern loves moist soil, so make sure only the top third of the soil dries out between waters, and make sure to reduce slightly in autumn and winter.

Humidity
Pteris plants love humidity, so will appreciate the use of a pebble tray!

Soil
Use a well-draining, fertile and moisture retentive mix to keep your thirsty fern happy. A mix with added coir and sand, such as one designed for ferns, will work well here. Repot every few years in spring as the plant grows.

Food
Feed every four waters in the growing season, reduce to every six in autumn and winter.

Temperature
Temperatures of about 15-26°C are great- make sure it doesn't drop below 12°C in winter.

Pet-safe
Yes, but too much nibbling won't be good for pets, small humans or the plant!

Sprouts Top Tips
The biggest danger to ferns is underwatering, and the Pteris is no exception! If its fronds start to turn yellow and go crispy, you may not be watering enough. A room that is too dry, or not humid enough, or a spot with too much bright light, will make your plant more likely to become dehydrated.
