A fast-growing and easy-care trailing succulent, Senecio radicans, or String of Bananas, lives up to its name with long strands of glossy, banana-shaped leaves. These curved, vibrant green leaves grow in neat, cascading chains, making it an ideal choice for hanging pots, shelf edges, or sunny windowsills. With the right light, it can even produce small, cinnamon-scented white flowers in late summer or autumn. A must-have for succulent lovers looking to add texture and movement to their indoor jungle.
Scientific Name
Senecio radicans (radicans = “rooting”, referring to how it trails and roots along stems)
Synonyms
Curio radicans (currently accepted botanical name), String of Bananas, Fishhook Senecio (though this is more commonly used for Curio radicans var. gloriosus)
Common Name
String of Bananas, Banana Vine, Trailing Senecio, String of Fish Hooks
Origin
Native to South Africa, where it grows as a groundcover in dry, rocky environments with bright sun and low rainfall.
Light
Thrives in bright, indirect light and can tolerate gentle direct sun. Too little light will cause the plant to become leggy, and the leaf shape may stretch. A sunny windowsill is ideal.
Water
Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water deeply, then let all excess drain. Overwatering is a common cause of root rot – this plant stores moisture in its leaves and prefers drought conditions over soggy soil.
Humidity
Prefers low to average household humidity. No misting required.
Soil
Use a free-draining cactus or succulent mix. You can amend regular compost with perlite, horticultural sand, or grit to improve drainage.
Food
Feed every 4–6 weeks in spring and summer with a diluted cactus fertiliser. Do not feed in winter.
Temperature
Prefers warm temperatures – 18–26°C is ideal. Protect from frost and avoid temperatures below 10°C.
Pet-safe
No – Senecio species are toxic if ingested by pets or humans.
Sprouts Top Tips
To keep your String of Bananas compact and full, pinch back overly long strands and propagate the cuttings. Rotate regularly for even growth, and grow in a shallow hanging pot for the best trailing effect.
Add a Pot & Care Essentials
Most customers add a pot or soil when purchasing this plant.
