Elegant, architectural, and wonderfully unusual, Syngonanthus chrysanthus ‘Mikado’ is prized for its fine grass like foliage and delicate golden button flowers held on tall slender stems. Native to nutrient poor wetlands in Brazil, this striking plant creates a soft fountain of deep green foliage topped with tiny metallic gold blooms that seem to float above the plant. Its clean sculptural form makes it especially popular in modern interiors, terrariums, and amongst collectors of unusual tropical plants.

Despite its delicate appearance, this fascinating species can thrive indoors when given bright light, pure water, and consistently moist conditions.

Scientific Name
Syngonanthus chrysanthus ‘Mikado’ (golden flowered pipewort)

Synonyms
Previously associated with the Eriocaulaceae family of pipewort plants.

Common Name
Mikado Plant, Golden Pipewort

Origin
Native to Brazil, where it grows in nutrient poor wetland habitats with consistently high humidity and bright light.

Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. Can tolerate gentle morning sun, but harsh direct sunlight may scorch the foliage. Lower light levels can lead to weaker growth and fewer flowers.

Water
Keep the soil consistently moist at all times and never allow it to dry out completely. This plant is sensitive to mineral build up, so rainwater, distilled water, or filtered water is strongly recommended.

Humidity
Thrives in moderate to high humidity. Appreciates placement in bathrooms, terrariums, cabinets, or near a humidifier, especially during winter when indoor air becomes dry.

Soil
Use a moisture retentive but airy mix. A blend containing coco coir, sphagnum moss, fine bark, and perlite works particularly well. Avoid heavily fertilised or dense composts.

Food
Feed sparingly during spring and summer using a very diluted houseplant fertiliser every 4 to 6 waters. Overfeeding can damage the roots.

Temp
Prefers temperatures between 18–26°C. Avoid temperatures below 15°C and protect from cold draughts.

Pet-safe
Considered non toxic, though it is still best kept out of reach of curious pets and children.

Sprouts Top Tips
Using rainwater or distilled water makes a huge difference to long term success with this plant, as it can be sensitive to minerals and chemicals commonly found in tap water.

Extras
The tiny golden flower heads can last for many months and gently sway above the foliage, giving the plant a soft floating appearance.

Did You Know?
The name ‘Mikado’ is thought to reference the plant’s fine upright stems, which resemble the traditional pick up sticks game often called Mikado in Europe.
