This low-growing, evergreen perennial forms a dense carpet of glossy green foliage, punctuated by delicate blue-violet flowers in spring and summer. Vinca minor is a vigorous ground cover plant, ideal for suppressing weeds in shaded areas, woodland gardens, and beneath shrubs. Its trailing stems root as they spread, making it an excellent choice for erosion control on banks and slopes.

Vinca minor, commonly known as Lesser Periwinkle, is celebrated for its ability to thrive in difficult spots where other plants struggle. Its long-lasting foliage and charming blooms provide year-round interest with minimal maintenance.

Scientific Name
Vinca minor (meaning ‘small bindweed’ in Latin)

Native to central and southern Europe

Pruning Tips
Trim back after flowering to control growth and maintain a tidy appearance. If needed, cut back more heavily in early spring to rejuvenate older plants.

Wildlife Value
Attractive to bees and other pollinators, providing an early-season nectar source.

Positioning
Thrives in partial to full shade but will tolerate sun if the soil remains moist. Ideal for woodland gardens, underplanting trees and shrubs, and covering difficult areas.

Water
Prefers consistently moist soil but is drought tolerant once established. Water occasionally during prolonged dry spells.

Soil
Grows best in well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Adapts well to most soil types, including clay, loam, and sandy soils.

Food
Minimal feeding required. If growth is slow, apply a light feed in early spring with a balanced fertiliser.

Pet-safe
Mildly toxic if ingested. Keep away from pets and children.

Sprouts Top Tips
For effective ground cover, plant in groups and allow it to spread naturally. If using near borders, keep an eye on growth as it can become invasive in favourable conditions.
