Scientific Name
× Odontoglossum (intergeneric Cambria hybrid)
× Odontoglossum refers to an intergeneric hybrid involving Odontoglossum and closely related genera such as Oncidium, Miltonia, and Cochlioda. Many orchids previously sold under × Odontoglossum are now grouped under the broad horticultural term Cambria Orchid. Due to complex hybridisation and ongoing reclassification, individual plants are rarely identifiable beyond being Cambria-type hybrids.
Synonyms
Cambria Orchid, Odontoglossum-type hybrid
Common Name
Cambria Orchid
Origin
Hybrid origin. Parent species originate from Central and South America, where they grow epiphytically in cooler, humid cloud forests.
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid strong direct sun, which can scorch the leaves. Good light levels are essential for flowering.
Water
Water when the compost begins to dry out, allowing excess water to drain freely. Water more frequently during active growth and flowering, reducing slightly in winter. Do not allow the plant to sit in water.
Humidity
Enjoys moderate humidity but adapts well to average household conditions. Performs well near a pebble tray or in a naturally humid room with good airflow.
Soil
Use a free-draining orchid bark mix suitable for epiphytic orchids. Repot every 1–2 years, ideally after flowering or when new growth begins.
Food
Feed every 2–3 waters during the growing season with a diluted orchid fertiliser. Reduce feeding significantly in winter.
Temperature
Prefers slightly cooler conditions than many tropical orchids. Ideal temperature range is 15–22°C. Avoid temperatures below 10–12°C and protect from cold draughts.
Pet-safe
Non-toxic. Considered safe for pets and children.
Sprouts Top Tips
A cooler night-time temperature and bright light can help trigger flower spikes on Cambria orchids.
Extras
Each pseudobulb typically flowers once, but new pseudobulbs will form and flower in future seasons.
