A graceful and eye-catching fern, Arachniodes simplicior ‘Variegata’, commonly known as the East Indian Holly Fern, features glossy, dark green fronds adorned with a distinctive creamy-yellow stripe down the center of each leaflet. Its elegant, arching fronds and variegated foliage make it a standout addition to shaded indoor spaces or woodland gardens.

Scientific Name
Arachniodes simplicior ‘Variegata’

(Arachniodes = from Greek “arachne” meaning spider, referencing the spidery aspect of spore clusters; simplicior = “simpler” or “unbranched”)

Common Name
East Indian Holly Fern, Variegated Holly Fern

Origin
Native to East Asia, including China and Japan, where it thrives in moist, shaded forest understories.

Light
Prefers partial to full shade. Bright, indirect light is ideal for indoor growth. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.

Water
Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Allow the top inch of soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Reduce watering frequency during the winter months.

Humidity
Thrives in high humidity environments. Aim for humidity levels above 60%. Use a humidifier, pebble tray, or regular misting to maintain moisture levels.

Soil
Use a well-draining, rich organic mix. A blend of peat moss, perlite, and compost works well. Ensure the soil remains slightly acidic to neutral (pH 5.5–7.0).

Food
Feed monthly during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength. Reduce feeding in autumn and winter.

Temperature
Prefers temperatures between 15–24°C. Protect from cold drafts and avoid temperatures below 10°C.

Pet-safe
Yes – Arachniodes simplicior ‘Variegata’ is non-toxic to pets and humans.

Sprouts Top Tips
Regularly remove any dead or yellowing fronds to encourage new growth. This fern can be propagated by division during repotting. It’s an excellent choice for adding texture and color contrast to shaded areas or as a unique houseplant.
