A vibrant and colourful mix, Coleus ‘Urban Mix’ is all about bold foliage in a wide range of patterns and tones, from deep burgundy and lime green to pinks, purples, and fiery oranges. Each plant is unique, with intricately marked leaves that bring instant colour and energy to indoor spaces. Easy to grow and quick to respond to care, it’s a brilliant choice for adding impact with minimal effort.

Scientific Name
Coleus scutellarioides (‘shield-like Coleus’)

Reclassification / History
Previously classified as Solenostemon scutellarioides. Now placed within the Coleus genus in the Lamiaceae family.

Synonyms
Solenostemon scutellarioides, Plectranthus scutellarioides

Common Name
Coleus, Painted Nettle

Origin
Native to Southeast Asia and surrounding tropical regions, widely cultivated for ornamental foliage.

Light
Prefers bright, indirect light to maintain vibrant colouring. Can tolerate some gentle direct sun, but avoid harsh midday light. Lower light may cause colours to fade.

Water
Keep the soil lightly moist but not soggy. Allow the top layer to dry slightly between waterings. Coleus can wilt quickly if too dry but usually recovers well after watering.

Humidity
Tolerates average household humidity but benefits from slightly higher levels, especially in warmer conditions.

Soil
Use a well-draining, nutrient-rich potting mix. A standard houseplant compost with added perlite works well.

Food
Feed every 2–3 waters during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertiliser to support strong, colourful growth.

Temperature
Prefers temperatures between 18–26°C. Avoid temperatures below 12–15°C and protect from cold drafts.

Pet-safe
Toxic if ingested, so keep out of reach of pets and children.

Sprouts Top Tips
Pinch out the growing tips regularly to encourage a bushier, fuller plant and prevent it from becoming leggy.

Extras
This is a mixed variety, so leaf colours and patterns will vary from plant to plant, making each one unique.

Did You Know?
Coleus are grown almost entirely for their foliage, with some varieties displaying more colour in their leaves than many flowering plants.
