The Peperomia caperata ‘Chocolat’ is a rich and velvety variety of the much-loved Emerald Ripple Peperomia. Its deep, chocolate-brown leaves are infused with subtle burgundy undertones and have a rippled texture that adds depth and drama to your plant display. Like other caperata varieties, it’s compact and low-maintenance, perfect for brightening a desk or windowsill with moody elegance. A semi-succulent by nature, it stores water in its fleshy leaves and prefers to dry out a little between waterings. A real treat for those who love dark-foliage houseplants.
Scientific Name
Peperomia caperata (wrinkled pepper-like plant) ‘Chocolat’
Common Name
Radiator Plant, Pepper Plant, Emerald Ripple Peperomia, Chocolate Ripple Peperomia
Origin
Native to Brazil
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. Tolerates lower light, but colour intensity may fade. Will benefit from a little morning or evening sun in cooler months.
Water
Water thoroughly when the top third of the soil feels dry. Avoid letting water sit on theleaves or crown, as this may cause rot.
Humidity
Enjoys moderate to high humidity. Mist occasionally or place on a humidity tray, especially in centrally heated homes.
Soil
Use a dense but well-draining potting mix – a blend suitable for aroids or general houseplants works well. Repot every 2–3 years in spring.
Food
Feed every four waters during spring and summer. In autumn and winter, reduce to every six to eight waters. Always pre-water before applying feed.
Temperature
Ideal range is 18–26°C. Avoid temperatures below 12°C and protect from cold draughts.
Pet-safe
Yes – non-toxic to cats and dogs, though not intended for nibbling.
Sprouts Top Tips
Gently aerate the soil from time to time (a chopstick works well) to mimic natural soil movement and improve drainage – especially helpful if your plant is in a lower-light spot.
Extras
Peperomia caperata varieties can be propagated easily from leaves. Take a healthy leaf, cut it in half horizontally, and press it into damp soil – with warmth and patience, you may see tiny new growths emerge!
