An Explosion of Tropical Foliage and a Gothic Black and White Theme in the Heart of Bannau Brycheiniog National Park

On 16th September 2024, we had the pleasure of working on the beautiful wedding of Emma, passionate houseplant blogger behind Good Growing, and her husband Joe. The venue was the stunning Tall John's House, in Bannau Brycheiniog National Park, and if we may say so, perfectly suited to being filled with tropical greenery. The combination of the wedding's striking black and white theme colours, the gothic charm of the manor house and restored barn, and an explosion of lush tropical foliage made Emma and Joe's day truly unforgettable.

When Emma from Good Growing approached us to style her wedding venue, we couldn’t have been more excited! Her vision was clear: an explosion of tropical plants and foliage, set against a gothic black and white colour scheme. Tall John’s House was the perfect location, with its beautifully restored barn and the gothic charm of the Manor House, nestled within the lush Bannau Brycheiniog National Park.

The Plants

For this unique wedding, we chose a variety of plants aimed at bringing a bold, tropical vibe to the venue while fitting seamlessly with the striking black-and-white theme.

🌿 Tropical Foliage and Statement Plants

To make a statement, we used taller tropical plants and large palm trees for the ceremony and reception. These plants added height and drama to the venue, perfectly complementing the boldness of the black-and-white décor.

🌿 Texture and Softness with Ferns and Ivy

To create a softer atmosphere and add texture to the space, we added ferns, ivy, and Monstera plants in different sizes. These tropical favourites were strategically placed around the venue to provide the perfect balance of wild, jungle-inspired greenery.

🌿 Smaller Plants for Detail

To add a more intimate touch to the tables, we used smaller houseplants like snake plants (Sansevieria), and prayer plants (Maranta). These plants were placed in beautiful terracotta pots, enhancing the tropical theme without overwhelming the space.

Decorating the Venue

From the welcome area to the cake table, we filled every corner of Tall John’s House with thoughtfully-placed plants to make the space feel lush and alive. Some key elements included:

🌿 Ceremony Area:

We placed large tropicals either side of the ceremony area, with smaller ferns and grasses dotted throughout for an immersive tropical experience. The natural greenery served as a dramatic backdrop for the vows, adding both elegance and drama.

🌿 Reception Tables:

For the reception, we adorned the tables with an array of herbs and tropical plants in black, silver and white pots. The atmosphere was relaxed but vibrant, and the contrast of the greenery with the thematic colours enhanced its modern, tropical feel.

🌿 Cake Table and Welcome Area:

We also dressed the cake table and welcome area with tropical plants, creating a seamless flow of lush greenery throughout the venue. As soon as they entered, guests were brought into a tropical paradise.

'We reached out to Sprouts for our wedding to use houseplants instead of florals. We wanted tropical jungle vibes and they understood the brief! The houseplants were amazing quality and really elevated the space and made the vision come together. Jessy and Tom were prompt and speedy for delivery and pickup! And I love knowing that I was able to have a more sustainable greenery option for our wedding.'
