Homalomena wallisii ‘Camouflage’ is a beautiful tropical houseplant admired for its striking, heart-shaped leaves decorated with an intricate camouflage-like pattern. Its foliage features a wonderful mix of deep green, lime and silvery-green markings, creating a distinctive mottled appearance. With its compact, bushy growth habit and colourful foliage, this unusual Homalomena makes a fantastic addition to any indoor plant collection.
Scientific Name
Homalomena wallisii ‘Camouflage’
Common Name(s)
Camouflage Homalomena, Queen of Hearts, Camouflage Plant
Origin
Homalomena wallisii is native to tropical South America, particularly Colombia, where it grows in warm, humid forest environments.
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate moderate light levels. Avoid strong direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves and fade their distinctive markings. A position near an east-facing window or slightly back from a bright south or west-facing window is ideal.
Water
Water when the top few centimetres of soil have dried, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away. Keep the soil lightly moist during active growth, but avoid allowing it to become waterlogged. Reduce watering slightly during autumn and winter.
Humidity
Prefers moderate to high humidity, ideally around 60% or above. Higher humidity will help maintain healthy foliage and prevent crispy leaf edges. Keep away from radiators and other sources of hot, dry air.
Soil
Use a rich, airy and well-draining houseplant mix. A combination of peat-free compost, perlite and fine orchid bark works well, allowing the roots to retain some moisture without becoming waterlogged.
Food
Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser diluted to half strength. Reduce feeding during autumn and winter when growth slows.
Temperature
Prefers warm temperatures between 18–27°C. Protect from cold draughts and sudden temperature changes, and avoid prolonged temperatures below 15°C.
Pet-safe
No. Like other members of the Araceae family, Homalomenas contain calcium oxalate crystals that can cause irritation if ingested. Keep out of reach of pets and children.
Sprouts Top Tips
Homalomenas appreciate consistency, so try to avoid sudden changes in light, temperature or watering. Keep your ‘Camouflage’ somewhere warm with plenty of indirect light and allow the top layer of compost to dry slightly before watering again.
If the leaves begin to droop, check the soil moisture before reaching for the watering can – both overwatering and underwatering can cause similar symptoms.
Extras
‘Camouflage’ naturally develops a compact, clumping growth habit, producing new leaves from the base of the plant. Its patterned foliage makes it particularly attractive in decorative pots and as part of a collection of tropical foliage plants.
Mature plants may occasionally produce small, inconspicuous flowers consisting of a spadix surrounded by a spathe, although it is primarily grown for its colourful leaves.
Did You Know?
The name ‘Camouflage’ comes from the beautiful irregular patches of green and silver scattered across its leaves, resembling a camouflage print. Homalomenas belong to the Araceae family, making them relatives of popular houseplants such as Philodendrons, Monsteras and Anthuriums.
