Anthurium luxurians ‘Platinum’ is a spectacular tropical houseplant admired for its extraordinary leaf texture and beautiful metallic colouring. Its thick, glossy leaves feature deeply quilted surfaces, prominent veins and an unusual silvery-green sheen that gives the foliage an almost sculptural appearance. With its distinctive bullate leaves and luxurious finish, this highly sought-after Anthurium is a wonderful addition to collections of rare and unusual houseplants.
Scientific Name
Anthurium luxurians ‘Platinum’ (horticultural trade name)
Common Name(s)
Platinum Quilted Anthurium, Platinum Anthurium, Quilted Anthurium
Origin
A cultivated selection of Anthurium luxurians, a species native to the tropical rainforests of Colombia, where it grows in warm, humid environments with filtered light and excellent drainage.
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. A position near an east-facing window or slightly away from a bright south or west-facing window is ideal.
Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, which can scorch the foliage and damage its beautiful metallic appearance. Too little light may slow growth and reduce the size of new leaves.
Water
Allow the top few centimetres of compost to dry between waterings, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away.
Anthuriums appreciate consistent moisture during active growth but dislike sitting in waterlogged compost. Avoid allowing the root ball to dry out completely for extended periods, particularly during warmer months.
Reduce watering slightly during autumn and winter.
Humidity
Prefers high humidity, ideally around 60–80%. Higher humidity encourages healthy leaf development and helps prevent crispy edges or damage to emerging foliage.
A humidifier, greenhouse cabinet or naturally humid room can provide suitable conditions. Good airflow is equally important to prevent fungal problems.
Soil
Use a chunky, airy and well-draining aroid mix. A combination of fine orchid bark, perlite, coco chips and a little peat-free compost works well.
Its roots appreciate plenty of oxygen alongside consistent moisture, so avoid heavy, compacted compost.
Food
Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser diluted to half strength.
Reduce feeding during autumn and winter when growth slows.
Temperature
Prefers warm temperatures between 18–28°C. Protect from cold draughts, sudden temperature changes and prolonged temperatures below 15°C.
Pet-safe
No. Anthuriums contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that can cause irritation to the mouth and digestive system if ingested. Keep out of reach of cats, dogs and children.
Sprouts Top Tips
The incredible quilted texture of Anthurium luxurians becomes more pronounced as the plant matures, so don’t worry if younger leaves appear smoother or less heavily textured.
Provide plenty of humidity while new leaves are emerging, as this helps them unfurl without becoming damaged.
Avoid touching fresh foliage unnecessarily. New Anthurium leaves are particularly delicate and need time to harden before developing their characteristic thick, glossy texture.
Extras
‘Platinum’ is particularly admired for its cool-toned, silvery-green foliage, which gives it a distinctive appearance compared with the deeper green forms of Anthurium luxurians.
As the plant matures, its leaves can become larger, thicker and more dramatically textured, creating a beautiful architectural display.
Like other Anthuriums, it may occasionally produce an inflorescence consisting of a spadix surrounded by a spathe. However, this variety is primarily grown for its extraordinary foliage.
Did You Know?
The deeply textured surface of Anthurium luxurians is described botanically as bullate, meaning the leaf tissue forms raised, blister-like sections between the veins.
This unusual structure creates the distinctive quilted appearance that makes the species so recognisable.
The name luxurians refers to the plant’s lush, abundant appearance, while ‘Platinum’ is a horticultural name highlighting the beautiful silvery tones of this particular selection.
