A true classic, Dracaena fragrans is loved for its upright growth and lush, arching leaves that bring an instant sense of calm to any room. Often called the Corn Plant due to its resemblance to maize foliage, this easygoing houseplant is perfect for adding height and structure to your space. Mixed varieties offer a blend of greens, from deep solid tones to subtle striping and variegation, making each plant feel a little bit unique.
Scientific Name
Dracaena fragrans (fragrant Dracaena, named for its occasionally scented flowers)
Synonyms
Previously classified under Cordyline in some older botanical references
Common Name
Corn Plant, Fragrant Dracaena
Origin
Native to tropical regions of Africa
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light but is very adaptable and can tolerate lower light conditions. Avoid strong direct sun, which can scorch the leaves
Water
Allow the top few centimetres of soil to dry out between waterings. Water thoroughly, then let excess drain away. Reduce watering in winter when growth slows
Humidity
Tolerates average household humidity well. No need for misting, though it will appreciate occasional airflow
Soil
Use a well-draining houseplant compost. A standard mix with a little added perlite works well
Food
Feed once a month during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Reduce feeding in autumn and winter
Temperature
Prefers temperatures between 18–26°C. Avoid temperatures below 12°C and keep away from cold drafts
Pet-safe
Toxic if ingested, so keep out of reach of pets and children
Sprouts Top Tips
If you notice brown leaf tips, it’s often due to tap water sensitivity. Letting water sit overnight before using it can help reduce this.
