Origin
Ficus microcarpa is native to tropical and subtropical regions of Asia and Australasia. The distinctive Ginseng form is cultivated to develop its enlarged, exposed roots before being trained into its characteristic miniature tree shape.
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light and can tolerate some gentle morning or evening sunshine. Avoid prolonged strong midday sun, particularly through glass. Too little light can result in slower growth and leaf drop.
Water
Water when the top few centimetres of soil have dried, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away. Avoid allowing the plant to sit in water or keeping the soil constantly wet. It may need more frequent watering during warm, bright weather.
Humidity
Prefers moderate humidity but generally adapts well to average household conditions. Keep away from radiators, cold draughts and sudden changes in temperature.
Soil
Use a well-draining houseplant or bonsai soil mix. Good drainage is particularly important, as the roots can be susceptible to rot if kept consistently wet.
Food
Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant or bonsai fertiliser. Reduce feeding during autumn and winter when growth slows.

Ficus can respond to being moved or experiencing a sudden change in conditions by dropping some of their leaves. Once you’ve found a bright, warm position where your Ginseng Bonsai is happy, try to keep its conditions consistent. New leaves should begin to appear as it settles in.
Extras
You can prune new shoots to maintain the compact, tree-like shape or allow them to grow for a fuller canopy. Rotate the plant occasionally to encourage balanced growth towards the light.
