Rhaphidophora korthalsii ‘Variegata’ is a rare and unusual climbing houseplant admired for its beautiful variegated foliage and distinctive growth habit. Its leaves feature a striking mix of deep green, creamy-white and pale yellow markings, with each new leaf developing its own unique pattern. When given a suitable climbing surface, the plant produces overlapping leaves that lie flat against their support, creating a fascinating shingled appearance.
Scientific Name
Rhaphidophora korthalsii ‘Variegata’ (horticultural trade name for the variegated form)
Common Name(s)
Variegated Shingle Plant, Variegated Rhaphidophora, Shingling Rhaphidophora
Origin
The species Rhaphidophora korthalsii is native to tropical regions of Southeast Asia, where it grows as a climbing vine in warm, humid forests. The variegated form is cultivated for its distinctive patterned foliage.
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. Good light is particularly important for maintaining healthy growth and supporting its variegated foliage. Avoid prolonged strong direct sunlight, which can scorch the pale sections of the leaves.
Water
Water when the top few centimetres of soil have dried, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away. Keep the growing medium lightly moist during active growth but avoid waterlogging. Reduce watering slightly during autumn and winter.
Humidity
Prefers high humidity, ideally around 60–80%. Higher humidity encourages healthy leaf development and helps support its natural climbing and shingling growth habit. A humidifier can be particularly beneficial in drier indoor environments.
Soil
Use a chunky, airy and well-draining aroid mix. A combination of orchid bark, perlite, coco coir and a little peat-free houseplant compost works well. Good airflow around the roots is essential.
Food
Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser diluted to half strength. Reduce feeding during autumn and winter when growth slows.
Temperature
Prefers warm temperatures between 18–28°C. Protect from cold draughts, sudden temperature changes and prolonged temperatures below 15°C.
Pet-safe
No. Like other members of the Araceae family, Rhaphidophora korthalsii contains calcium oxalate crystals that can cause irritation if ingested. Keep out of reach of pets and children.
Sprouts Top Tips
Give your Variegated Shingle Plant a flat climbing surface, such as a wooden plank or moss board, to encourage its distinctive overlapping leaf arrangement. Keeping the support slightly moist can help the aerial roots attach and establish themselves.
Provide plenty of bright, indirect light to support healthy variegated growth, but avoid exposing the delicate pale sections to strong direct sunlight.
Extras
Young plants develop smaller leaves that can sit closely against a climbing surface. As the plant matures, its foliage can become larger and more divided, particularly when it reaches a suitable height and receives consistent growing conditions.
The amount of variegation varies between leaves, ranging from delicate speckles and marbling to larger creamy-white or pale yellow sections.
Did You Know?
Rhaphidophora korthalsii is known for its fascinating shingling growth habit, where juvenile leaves overlap and press closely against tree trunks or other vertical surfaces.
This adaptation allows the plant to climb efficiently through tropical forests towards brighter light. As it matures, the plant can develop dramatically different foliage, a process known as heteroblasty.
