Aglaonema ‘Silver Blue’ is a beautiful tropical houseplant admired for its unusual silvery-blue foliage and elegant, understated colouring. Its broad, glossy leaves feature soft shades of silver, blue-green and deeper green, creating a subtle, almost metallic appearance. With its naturally bushy growth habit and wonderfully easy-going nature, this striking Chinese Evergreen is perfect for adding texture and colour to shelves, side tables and indoor plant collections.
Scientific Name
Aglaonema ‘Silver Blue’
Common Name(s)
Silver Blue Chinese Evergreen, Chinese Evergreen, Silver Blue Aglaonema
Origin
A cultivated ornamental variety of Aglaonema, a genus native to tropical and subtropical regions of Southeast Asia and surrounding areas. These plants naturally grow beneath the forest canopy in warm, humid environments.
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate moderate light levels. Avoid prolonged strong direct sunlight, which can scorch the foliage. A position near an east-facing window or slightly away from a brighter window is ideal. Lower light levels may slow growth and make the silvery colouring less pronounced.
Water
Allow the top few centimetres of compost to dry between waterings, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away. Aglaonemas prefer slightly moist soil during active growth but dislike sitting in waterlogged compost. Reduce watering during autumn and winter.
Humidity
Prefers moderate to high humidity, ideally around 50–70%, but generally adapts well to average household conditions. Keep away from radiators and cold draughts, which can cause brown leaf edges.
Soil
Use a well-draining, peat-free houseplant mix with added perlite and fine orchid bark. The compost should retain a little moisture while allowing plenty of airflow around the roots.
Food
Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser diluted to half strength. Reduce or stop feeding during autumn and winter when growth slows.
Temperature
Prefers warm temperatures between 18–27°C. Protect from cold draughts, sudden temperature changes and prolonged temperatures below 15°C.
Pet-safe
No. Aglaonemas contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that can cause irritation to the mouth and digestive system if ingested. Keep out of reach of cats, dogs and children.
Sprouts Top Tips
Give your ‘Silver Blue’ plenty of bright, indirect light to maintain its beautiful silvery-blue colouring. Avoid placing it in strong direct sunlight, which can damage the delicate leaf markings.
Allow the upper layer of compost to dry before watering again, and gently wipe the leaves with a damp cloth occasionally to remove dust and keep their glossy appearance.
Extras
‘Silver Blue’ develops a naturally compact, bushy growth habit, producing new leaves from the centre of the plant as it matures. Its unusual cool-toned foliage provides a beautiful contrast alongside darker green and brightly coloured houseplants.
Mature plants may occasionally produce small, pale flowers consisting of a spadix surrounded by a spathe, similar to those found on Peace Lilies. These are relatively inconspicuous compared with the decorative foliage.
Did You Know?
Aglaonemas have been cultivated as ornamental houseplants for generations, with modern breeding producing an incredible range of varieties featuring shades of silver, blue-green, pink, red and cream.
The name Aglaonema comes from Greek words meaning ‘bright’ and ‘thread’, a reference to the plant’s floral structures.
