Rhipsalis teres f. prismatica, commonly known as the Prism Mistletoe Cactus, is an unusual tropical cactus admired for its slender, angular stems and wonderfully sculptural growth habit. Unlike the spiny desert cacti we’re more familiar with, this fascinating species produces smooth, green stems that branch into delicate, cascading clusters. Its distinctive prism-shaped growth gives it an almost coral-like appearance, making it a beautiful addition to hanging planters, shelves and collections of unusual houseplants.

Scientific Name
Rhipsalis teres f. prismatica

Common Name(s)
Prism Mistletoe Cactus, Mistletoe Cactus, Jungle Cactus

Origin
Native to Brazil, where Rhipsalis teres grows in tropical and subtropical forests. It is an epiphytic cactus, naturally growing on trees in warm, humid environments rather than in the dry, sandy conditions associated with desert cacti.

Light
Prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate moderate light levels. Gentle morning or evening sunlight is usually well tolerated, but avoid prolonged strong midday sun, which can cause the stems to yellow or scorch.

A position near an east-facing window or slightly away from a bright south or west-facing window is ideal.

Water
Allow the top few centimetres of compost to dry between waterings, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away.

Unlike desert cacti, Prism Mistletoe Cacti prefer a little more consistent moisture and should not be left completely dry for extended periods during active growth. Reduce watering during autumn and winter, allowing more of the compost to dry between waterings.

Humidity
Prefers moderate to high humidity, ideally around 50–70%. A bright bathroom, kitchen or position near a humidifier can provide suitable conditions.

Although Rhipsalis can adapt to average household humidity, particularly dry air may cause the stems to become shrivelled or stressed.

Soil
Use a loose, airy and well-draining growing medium. A combination of peat-free houseplant compost, fine orchid bark and perlite works well.

As an epiphytic cactus, it appreciates good airflow around its roots and should never be left sitting in heavy, waterlogged compost.

Food
Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser diluted to half strength.

Reduce or stop feeding during autumn and winter when growth slows.

Temperature
Prefers temperatures between 18–27°C. Protect from cold draughts and prolonged temperatures below 12°C.

Pet-safe
Yes. Rhipsalis species are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs.

Sprouts Top Tips
Don’t treat your Prism Mistletoe Cactus like a typical desert cactus! Although it stores moisture in its stems, it naturally grows in tropical forests and appreciates more regular watering and higher humidity than most cacti.

Give it plenty of bright, filtered light and allow the upper layer of compost to dry before watering again.

Its delicate, branching stems can be fragile, so handle carefully when moving or repotting.

Extras
The Prism Mistletoe Cactus develops a wonderfully intricate growth habit, with angular, branching stems that gradually form a dense, cascading display.

As it matures, the plant may produce small, pale flowers along its stems, followed by tiny, berry-like fruits if pollination is successful.

Its unusual shape makes it particularly attractive in hanging planters or displayed on a high shelf where its branching stems can grow freely.

Did You Know?
Rhipsalis is one of the few cactus genera found naturally outside the Americas, with Rhipsalis baccifera also occurring in parts of Africa and Asia.

Unlike most cacti, which are adapted to hot, dry environments, Rhipsalis species have evolved to live in tropical forests, often growing high in the branches of trees.

The name prismatica refers to the distinctive angular, prism-like shape of this plant’s stems.
