A truly striking species begonia, Begonia ignita is admired for its dramatic foliage, deep colouring, and richly tropical appearance. The textured leaves often display dark olive to bronze tones with contrasting veining, while the undersides and stems can develop fiery red hues that inspired the species name ignita, meaning “flaming” or “fiery.” Compact yet bold, this unusual begonia makes a stunning addition to terrariums, indoor plant cabinets, or collector houseplant displays.
Native to tropical rainforest environments, this begonia thrives in warm, humid conditions with bright filtered light. Given the right care, it develops lush foliage with increasingly intense colour and texture as it matures.
Scientific Name
Begonia ignita (fiery begonia)
Common Name
Fiery Begonia
Origin
Native to tropical rainforest regions of Southeast Asia, where it grows in warm, shaded, humid environments beneath the forest canopy.
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, especially during the middle of the day, as this can scorch the foliage and dull the colouring.
Water
Keep the soil lightly moist but never waterlogged. Allow the top layer of soil to begin drying slightly between waterings. Reduce watering during cooler months.
Humidity
Thrives in moderate to high humidity levels above 60%. Ideal for terrariums, indoor cabinets, bathrooms, or rooms with a humidifier. Avoid dry air and cold draughts.
Soil
Use a loose, airy, free draining mix rich in organic matter. A blend containing coco coir, fine bark, sphagnum moss, and perlite works especially well.
Food
Feed every 2 to 4 waters during spring and summer using a diluted balanced houseplant fertiliser. Reduce feeding during autumn and winter.
Temp
Prefers temperatures between 18–26°C. Avoid temperatures below 15°C and protect from sudden temperature changes.
Pet-safe
Toxic if ingested, so keep away from pets and children.
Sprouts Top Tips
Consistent humidity and gentle airflow help keep the foliage looking its best. Avoid overwatering in cooler conditions, as species begonias can be prone to rot if kept too wet.
Extras
The fiery red tones on the stems and leaf undersides become more pronounced in warm, stable growing conditions with bright filtered light.
Did You Know?
The species name ignita comes from Latin meaning “set alight” or “fiery,” referencing the rich glowing tones often found throughout the plant.
