Carpet Moss looks fabulous in terrariums, adding texture and colour to your miniature world. We also find it works well for Kokedama projects, in both larger and smaller segments. This moss grows across ground and tree trunk in its natural habitat like, well, a carpet! It loves high humidity and doesn't like direct sun, preferring shaded parts of woodland. The size of the mats we can get is much smaller than how they'd grow in the wild, and varies from tray to tray, but however it arrives, this moss looks fabulous and can recover from dehydrating with a good soak in some water. As this moss is collected wild, it may contain pinecones, sticks, and the occasional lost European hiker, because of this, we wouldn't recommend using this moss within animal enclosures without you treating and manually removing pine needs first, other plant material or critters that may be living within the moss.

Scientific Name
Hypnum cupressiforme (cypress-shaped sleep lichen)

Common Name
Carpet Moss, Cypress-Leaved Moss, Hypnum Moss

Origin
Carpet Mosses are found all over the world, except Antarctica. This moss is grown in managed woodlands in Europe.

Light
To keep Carpet Moss happy, keep it in bright, mostly indirect light; it can handle only a little direct sun.

Water
Keep Carpet Moss moist all the time; it can rehydrate from drying out a little but will need soaking. It prefers rainwater or filtered water over tapwater if possible.

Humidity
High humidity is the perfect environment for Pincushion Moss, which makes it ideal for terrariums!

Soil
In a terrarium, we recommend using a specific terrarium soil, with elements such as coir, bark, sand and activated charcoal.

Food
N/A - Carpet Moss thrives in nutrient-poor areas

Temperature
Pincushion Moss prefers temperatures between 10-25°C, but it is hardy in the UK. It can come back in spring after freezing in winter.

Pet-safe
Yes, but too much nibbling won't be good for pets, small humans or the plant! This moss is likely to contain pine, so may not be suitable for use in vivarium.

Important Infomation
This is living moss and is not preserved. The tray roughly measures 28 x 38cm and usually has two to three layers of moss covering a rough surface area of around 0.3m2 (or 3000cm2) but this is worked out on average and depends on the thickness of the moss.

Size explanation
The sizes listed are based on the rough surface area the pieces of moss will cover, not individual 'clumps', sheets, or pieces of moss. We will endeavour to make sure you have good quality pieces when buying smaller sizes. For example, if you have a pot with a diameter of 10cm, the 10 x 10cm size should be plenty.

If you require a single piece of moss to be a specific size (for example a 10cm single chunk of pincushion moss), please put this in your order notes. We will try to accommodate the request if we can, and will contact you if we need to discuss it.

Full Trays
Full trays are not always kept in stock, and will sometimes need to be ordered in. The lead time with our supplier is good on this, but it can mean a full tray can take a few days to be shipped. If you need a full tray for a certain date, please place this in your order notes, and feel free to contact us before hand if unsure.
