One of the most striking jewel Alocasias, Alocasia baginda ‘Silver Nebula’ is admired for its thick, metallic silver-grey leaves etched with dramatic dark green veins. Native to the tropical rainforests of Borneo, this compact species thrives in warm, humid conditions and makes an exceptional statement plant despite its relatively modest size.

The species name baginda comes from the Malay word meaning “king” or “royalty”, a fitting name for this elegant and highly sought-after Alocasia.

Origin
A cultivated form of Alocasia baginda, a species native to the humid forests of Borneo.
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. Plenty of filtered light helps maintain the beautiful silver colouring, while direct midday sun can scorch the foliage. It will tolerate lower light levels but may grow more slowly and produce less vibrant leaves.
Water
Allow the top 2–3 cm of compost to dry before watering thoroughly. Keep the compost lightly moist during the growing season but never waterlogged, as Alocasias are prone to root rot if left sitting in wet soil. Reduce watering during the cooler months when growth naturally slows.
Humidity
Thrives in high humidity (60% or above). While it can adapt to average household humidity, higher levels encourage healthier foliage and reduce the risk of crispy leaf edges.
Temperature
Prefers temperatures between 18–28°C. Avoid temperatures below 15°C and protect from cold draughts or sudden temperature changes.
Soil
Use a free-draining aroid compost rich in organic matter. A mix containing peat-free compost, orchid bark, perlite and a little horticultural charcoal provides excellent drainage while retaining enough moisture around the roots.
Feeding
Feed every 2–4 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser at half strength. Stop feeding during autumn and winter when growth slows.
Growth Habit
A compact, clump-forming Alocasia reaching approximately 30–50 cm tall and wide. New leaves emerge from the centre of the plant and gradually replace older foliage.
Toxicity
Toxic if eaten by pets and humans due to calcium oxalate crystals. Keep out of reach of children and animals.
