Anthurium luxurians is a spectacular tropical houseplant prized for its thick, glossy, deeply textured leaves. Its distinctive quilted foliage features an intricate network of raised veins and a beautiful, almost metallic sheen. New leaves often emerge in shades of bronze or reddish-brown before gradually maturing to a rich, deep green. A real statement plant for collectors and lovers of unusual foliage.
Scientific Name
Anthurium luxurians
Common Name(s)
Quilted Anthurium, Luxurians Anthurium
Origin
Native to the tropical rainforests of Colombia, where it grows in warm, humid conditions.
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid strong direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves and damage their beautiful texture. An east-facing window or a position slightly back from a bright south or west-facing window is ideal.
Water
Water when the top few centimetres of soil have dried, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away. Keep the growing medium lightly moist during active growth, but never waterlogged. Reduce watering slightly during autumn and winter.
Humidity
Prefers high humidity, ideally around 60–80%. It will appreciate a humidifier or a naturally humid environment with good airflow. Low humidity can cause crispy leaf edges and affect the development of new foliage.
Soil
Requires a chunky, airy and well-draining aroid mix. A combination of orchid bark, perlite, coco coir and a little peat-free houseplant compost works well. Good airflow around the roots is essential to prevent rot.
Food
Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser diluted to half strength. Reduce feeding during autumn and winter when growth slows.
Temperature
Prefers warm temperatures between 18–28°C. Protect from cold draughts, sudden temperature changes and prolonged temperatures below 15°C.
Pet-safe
No. Like other Anthuriums, Anthurium luxurians contains calcium oxalate crystals that can cause irritation if ingested. Keep out of reach of pets and children.
Sprouts Top Tips
Consistency is key with Anthurium luxurians. Maintain warm temperatures, high humidity and evenly moist but well-drained roots to encourage healthy new growth. Its thick, textured leaves can collect dust, so gently clean them with a soft, damp cloth to keep them looking their best.
Extras
Anthurium luxurians is a relatively slow-growing species that develops increasingly impressive foliage as it matures. Each new leaf emerges with a beautiful bronze or reddish tint before gradually hardening off into its characteristic glossy green colour.
Like other Anthuriums, it can also produce a flower consisting of a spadix surrounded by a spathe, although its extraordinary foliage is the main attraction.
Did You Know?
The deeply textured surface of Anthurium luxurians is described as bullate, a botanical term used for leaves with raised, blister-like areas between the veins. This unusual texture gives the foliage its distinctive quilted appearance, making it one of the most recognisable Anthuriums among collectors.
