Ficus benghalensis - Bengal Fig

Bengal Figs can grow to absolutely gargantuan proportions in their native habitat, holding records for size even amongst large trees, but don't worry - your Ficus probably won't get that big indoors! It is easygoing as a houseplant, happy to do its thing and bring a slice of tropical jungle into your home. This plant is recognised as the national tree of India, and here you can bring that very tree into your home. Growing as a small-scale tree with its mid-green, slightly fluffy leaves sprouting from its trunk, and showing off their pale silvery veins, it will look fantastic as a standing plant in your living room, hallway or other space in your home. And while it won't grow quite as big as it does in the wild, with patience it can grow into a proper statement plant for your home.

Origin
Native to tropical areas of Asia, ranging through India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Maldives, Andaman Islands, Assam, Laccadive Islands and Assam.

Light
Enjoys bright, indirect light but tolerates some shade. Avoid direct sunlight in summer, as it can cause leaf burn, but you can give it some direct sun in autumn and winter when light is more scarce.

Water
Water when the soil is nearly dry, then thoroughly soak the soil. Reduce watering in autumn and winter and use lukewarm water to avoid shocking the roots. Ensure the pot has good drainage and avoid waterlogging.

Humidity
Prefers moderate to high humidity and benefits from group planting with other plants or the use of a pebble tray. Avoid draughts and dry environments near radiators

Soil
Plant in a well-draining tropical potting mix, such as one designed for Ficus plants, with added aeration materials like perlite or bark. Repot every 2-3 years as needed.

Food
Fertilise occasionally during spring and summer with a balanced liquid feed every four waters. Pause feeding in autumn and winter.

Temperature
Thrives in temperatures between 18-30°C. Protect from draughts and avoid temperatures below 15°C.
