This beautiful evergreen perennial produces stunning, pure white flowers that gradually fade to soft pink as they age, brightening up winter and early spring gardens. Hardy to -15°C, it’s perfect for adding a touch of elegance to shaded spots, woodland gardens, or containers. Known for its long-lasting blooms, this variety of Hellebore is a must-have for gardeners looking to add early-season interest.
Helleborus niger ‘Christmas Carol’ (commonly known as the Christmas Rose) is a striking variety of hellebore that blooms in late winter to early spring, often when little else is in flower. Its elegant white flowers are a welcome sight in the darker months and last for a considerable time, gradually fading to pink before finally turning green. The plant’s glossy evergreen leaves provide year-round interest and contrast beautifully with the delicate blooms. It prefers shade and cool, moist conditions, making it ideal for woodland settings or the shaded corners of the garden.
| Perennial | Upright growth habit | Flowers: Late winter to early spring, foliage: evergreen |
Scientific Name
Helleborus niger ‘Christmas Carol’ (Christmas Rose, variety: Christmas Carol)
Common Name
Christmas Rose, Winter Rose
Origin
Native to central and southern Europe, but widely cultivated in gardens.
Pruning Tips
Remove spent flowers and any damaged or old foliage in early spring to make room for new growth. Avoid cutting back too much of the foliage, as it provides essential protection for the plant through winter.
Wildlife Value
The early flowers are a great source of nectar for early pollinators, especially bees.
Positioning
Thrives in partial to full shade, ideally under trees or in the sheltered part of the garden. It prefers cool, moist conditions and should be protected from harsh winds.
Water
Keep soil consistently moist, particularly in dry spells, but avoid waterlogging. Well-drained soil is crucial for this plant.
Soil
Prefers slightly alkaline, well-draining soil rich in organic matter.
Food
Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring. Add organic mulch around the base of the plant to help retain moisture and feed the soil.
Pet-safe
Toxic to pets—avoid contact with the plant, as ingestion can cause gastrointestinal distress.
Sprouts Top Tips
Plant Hellebores in a location where they will receive some protection from frost, as they bloom early in the season. A mulch of leaves or compost around the base will help keep the roots cool and moist during the summer months.
