A true collector’s favourite, Hoya callistophylla ‘Tim’ is admired for its spectacular foliage. Its large, thick, deep green leaves are beautifully patterned with bold lime-green veins, creating a striking contrast that makes each leaf look almost hand-painted. This slow-growing species produces elegant trailing vines, making it ideal for displaying in a hanging pot or training up a moss pole or trellis. While the dramatic foliage is the main attraction, mature plants may also reward you with clusters of sweetly fragrant cream flowers with reddish-purple centres. An excellent choice for Hoya enthusiasts looking to add something truly special to their collection.

Scientific Name

Hoya callistophylla ‘Tim’

Common Name

Wax Plant, Porcelain Flower, Wax Vine

Origin

Hoya callistophylla is native to the tropical rainforests of Borneo, where it grows as an epiphyte on trees beneath the forest canopy. ‘Tim’ is a collector’s clone name used within the horticultural trade for this distinctive form.

Light

Thrives in bright, indirect light and benefits from a little gentle morning or late afternoon sun. Avoid prolonged direct midday sun, which may scorch the leaves.

Water

Allow the top third of the potting mix to dry before watering thoroughly. Hoyas prefer to dry slightly between waterings and should never be left sitting in water. Reduce watering during the cooler months when growth naturally slows.

Humidity

Prefers moderate to high humidity but adapts well to average household conditions. Higher humidity will encourage stronger growth and larger, healthier foliage.

Soil

Plant in a chunky, free-draining houseplant mix containing bark, perlite and peat-free compost or coco coir. Excellent drainage and airflow around the roots are essential for healthy growth.

Food

Feed every three to four weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser. Once mature, a fertiliser slightly higher in potassium can help encourage flowering.

Temperature

Prefers temperatures between 18–28°C and should be protected from temperatures below 15°C.

Pet-safe

Hoyas are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. However, chewing any houseplant may cause mild stomach upset in some pets.

Sprouts Top Tips

Hoya callistophylla is naturally a slow-growing species, so don’t be discouraged if it takes time to fill out. Give it plenty of bright, indirect light to maintain its rich leaf colour and bold veining, avoid overwatering, and resist trimming long, leafless vines—these often develop new leaves and flower spurs over time. With patience, this stunning Hoya will become one of the standout plants in your collection.
