A true collector’s Hoya, Hoya clemensiorum is prized for its spectacular foliage rather than its flowers. Its large, elongated leaves are deep green with beautifully raised, contrasting veins that create a bold, textured appearance unlike almost any other Hoya. As the plant matures, it produces long trailing vines that look stunning cascading from a shelf or climbing a support. Slow growing but incredibly rewarding, this is an exceptional species for collectors looking for something truly distinctive. Given plenty of bright, indirect light and a well-draining potting mix, Hoya clemensiorum will thrive for many years and, once mature, may reward you with clusters of sweetly fragrant cream and pink flowers.

Scientific Name
Hoya clemensiorum

Common Name
Wax Plant, Porcelain Flower, Wax Vine

Origin
Native to the tropical rainforests of Borneo, where it grows as an epiphyte on trees beneath the forest canopy.

Light
Thrives in bright, indirect light and benefits from a little gentle morning or late afternoon sun. Avoid prolonged direct midday sun, which may scorch the leaves.

Water
Allow around the top third of the potting mix to dry before watering thoroughly. Reduce watering during autumn and winter, and never leave the plant sitting in water.

Humidity
Prefers moderate to high humidity, ideally above 60%, although it will adapt to average household conditions if kept away from radiators and draughts.

Soil
Grow in a chunky, free-draining mix containing bark, perlite and peat-free houseplant compost or coco coir. Good airflow around the roots is essential for healthy growth.

Food
Feed every three to four weeks during spring and summer using a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser. Reduce feeding during the cooler months when growth naturally slows.

Temperature
Prefers temperatures between 18–28°C and should be protected from temperatures below 15°C.

Pet-safe
Hoyas are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. However, chewing any houseplant may cause mild stomach upset in some pets.

Sprouts Top Tips
Hoya clemensiorum is grown for its spectacular foliage, so don’t be alarmed if it grows more slowly than some other Hoyas. Avoid overwatering, provide plenty of bright, indirect light, and be patient—its dramatic veined leaves become even more impressive as the plant matures. Resist cutting off long, leafless vines too soon, as these often produce new leaves and flower spurs over time.
