Neoregelia ‘Fancy’ is a striking tropical bromeliad admired for its colourful foliage and beautifully symmetrical rosette. Its broad, arching leaves form an attractive, vase-like shape, with vibrant colours and contrasting markings that bring a splash of tropical character to any indoor space. Compact, architectural and wonderfully unusual, this eye-catching plant is perfect for adding colour to shelves, plant displays and bright rooms.

Scientific Name
Neoregelia ‘Fancy’

Common Name(s)
Fancy Bromeliad, Blushing Bromeliad, Neoregelia

Origin
A cultivated ornamental variety of Neoregelia, a genus of bromeliads native to tropical South America, particularly Brazil. Many species naturally grow as epiphytes, attaching themselves to trees in warm, humid forests.

Light
Prefers bright, indirect light to maintain its vibrant foliage colours. Gentle morning or evening sunlight can be beneficial, but avoid prolonged strong midday sun, which may scorch the leaves. Too little light can cause the plant’s colouring to become less pronounced.

Water
Keep a small amount of fresh water in the central cup formed by the leaves, replacing it regularly to prevent stagnation. Water the compost lightly when it begins to dry, allowing excess water to drain away. Avoid keeping the roots constantly wet, as Neoregelias are susceptible to root rot.

During cooler months, reduce watering and avoid leaving cold water sitting in the central cup for prolonged periods.

Humidity
Prefers moderate to high humidity, ideally around 50–70%. A bright bathroom, kitchen or position near a humidifier can help maintain healthy foliage. Good airflow is also important, particularly in humid conditions.

Soil
Use a loose, airy and very well-draining bromeliad mix. A combination of fine orchid bark, perlite and a little peat-free compost works well. Neoregelias have relatively small root systems, so avoid heavy, compacted compost.

Food
Feed sparingly every 6–8 weeks during spring and summer with a heavily diluted bromeliad or balanced liquid fertiliser. Apply to the growing medium rather than allowing concentrated fertiliser to collect in the central cup. Little to no feeding is needed during autumn and winter.

Temperature
Prefers warm temperatures between 18–27°C. Protect from cold draughts and prolonged temperatures below 12–15°C.

Pet-safe
Yes. Neoregelia bromeliads are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs.

Sprouts Top Tips
Neoregelias absorb much of the moisture they need through their leaves and central rosette, so avoid treating them like traditional houseplants that rely entirely on their roots.

Refresh the water in the central cup regularly and provide bright, filtered light to encourage the best foliage colouring. Keep the compost well-drained and avoid overwatering.

Extras
Neoregelias are known for their spectacular foliage rather than showy flower spikes. When mature, the plant produces small flowers nestled deep within the central cup, often accompanied by more intense leaf colouring.

After flowering, the original rosette will gradually decline, but it typically produces small offsets, known as pups, around its base. These can eventually be separated and grown into new plants once they are sufficiently established.

Did You Know?
Unlike many other bromeliads, Neoregelias don’t produce tall, colourful flower spikes. Instead, their tiny flowers appear within the central water-holding cup, surrounded by brightly coloured leaves.

In their natural habitat, these cups can collect rainwater and provide miniature habitats for insects and other small rainforest creatures.
