Pincushion Moss (Leucobryum glaucum) is one of the most distinctive mosses used in terrariums, forming soft, rounded cushions that add texture, structure, and a lush woodland feel to miniature landscapes.
In nature, this moss grows in shaded woodland areas where it forms dome-shaped mounds across the forest floor. These natural cushions make it perfect for terrarium landscapes, kokedama projects, and decorative plant displays, helping to recreate the look of a miniature forest.
Pincushion Moss thrives in high humidity and shaded environments, making it especially well suited to closed terrariums and bottle gardens. Its vibrant green colour and sculptural form help create depth and contrast within planted displays.
The moss we receive arrives in natural cushions that vary slightly in size and shape from tray to tray. However it arrives, Pincushion Moss is resilient and can recover well from drying out with a good soak in water.
As this moss is wild-collected from managed European woodlands, trays may occasionally contain small pieces of woodland debris such as pine needles, twigs, cones, or other natural material.
Scientific Name
Leucobryum glaucum (glaucous pincushion moss)
Common Names
Pincushion Moss, Cushion Moss, Leucobryum Moss, Large White Moss
Origin
Pincushion Moss is found across Europe and eastern North America. The moss we supply is collected from managed European woodlands.
Why Use Pincushion Moss in Terrariums?
• Creates natural moss cushions and mounds in terrarium landscapes
• Adds texture and structure to terrariums and bottle gardens
• Perfect for kokedama moss balls
• Helps create a natural woodland aesthetic
• Ideal for topping plant pots or covering soil
Light
Pincushion Moss prefers bright, indirect light and shaded conditions. Avoid strong direct sun, which can cause the moss to dry out.
Water
Keep the moss consistently moist. If it dries out, it can often be revived by soaking it thoroughly in water. Rainwater or filtered water is preferable where possible.
Humidity
High humidity is ideal, which is why Pincushion Moss works particularly well in terrariums and humid indoor plant environments.
Soil
When used in terrariums, we recommend a well-balanced terrarium substrate, typically containing materials such as coir, bark, sand and activated charcoal.
Food
None required – Pincushion Moss naturally thrives in nutrient-poor environments.
Temperature
Pincushion Moss grows best between 10–25°C and is hardy in the UK. It can tolerate winter temperatures outdoors and often returns with fresh growth in spring.
Pet-safe
Yes – although excessive nibbling isn’t recommended for pets, children, or the moss itself.
Important Information
This is living moss, not preserved moss.
A full tray roughly measures 28 × 38 cm and typically contains two layers of moss, covering an approximate surface area of around 0.2 m² (2000 cm²). As this is a natural product, thickness and coverage may vary between trays.
Moss Size Guide
The sizes listed refer to the approximate surface area the moss will cover, rather than individual clumps or cushions.
We always select the best pieces available when preparing smaller portions.
For example:
If you have a pot with a 10 cm diameter, the 10 × 10 cm size should usually provide enough moss to cover the surface.
If you require a single moss cushion in a specific size or shape, please leave a note with your order and we will do our best to accommodate your request.
Full Moss Trays
Full trays are not always kept in stock and may occasionally need to be ordered from our supplier. Lead times are usually short, but this can sometimes add a few extra days to dispatch.
If you need a tray for a specific date, please add a note to your order or contact us beforehand to check availability.
Add a Pot & Care Essentials
Most customers add a pot or soil when purchasing this plant.Great communication with the seller. Moss looks very healthy. Thank you 😊
Bigger than expected and perfect for my isopods
The moss arrived very quickly and in excellent shape. Brilliant service as usual
Arrived alive and amusingly in one of those foil lined bags I associate with naan from a takeaway. Which was great for keeping the moisture in, in transit! Packaged really securely and sent very promptly!
