Subtle yet striking, Philodendron brandtianum is a beautiful climbing houseplant loved for its heart-shaped leaves dusted with shimmering silver markings. Each olive-green leaf is elegantly veined and overlaid with patches of silver, creating a soft, metallic finish that catches the light. This versatile plant can be trained to climb a moss pole or trail gracefully from a hanging pot, bringing texture and understated beauty to your indoor collection.

Scientific Name
Philodendron brandtianum
(brandtianum = named in honour of German botanist A. Brandt)

Common Name
Silver-Leaf Philodendron, Brandi Philodendron

Origin
Native to the tropical rainforests of South America, particularly Bolivia, Brazil, and Ecuador, where it grows as a climbing epiphyte in shaded, humid environments.

Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. Too much direct sun may scorch the leaves, while too little light can dull the silver variegation. A bright spot with filtered light is ideal.

Water
Water when the top 3–5 cm of soil feels dry. Philodendron brandtianum likes consistent moisture during the growing season but does not tolerate soggy roots. Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings, especially in winter.

Humidity
Enjoys moderate to high humidity. Regular misting, a pebble tray, or a humidifier will help maintain its vibrant foliage, especially in dry rooms.

Soil
Use a light, well-draining aroid mix – a blend of indoor compost with added bark, perlite, and coir is perfect to mimic its natural growing conditions.

Food
Feed every 4–6 weeks during the spring and summer with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser. Reduce feeding in autumn and winter when growth slows.

Temperature
Prefers temperatures between 18–26°C. Protect from cold draughts and avoid exposure to temperatures below 13°C.

Pet-safe
No – Philodendron species are toxic if ingested by pets and humans.

Sprouts Top Tips
Provide a moss pole or support to encourage larger leaves and stronger silver markings. Wipe leaves gently with a damp cloth to remove dust and allow the variegation to shine.
