This plant's gorgeous, chestnut-like leaves are attached to long, vining stems which can be trained to grow up various structures or let to dangle loose. Be wary, though - their clever vining stems will grab on to whatever they can reach and start to climb and curl around it. This could be other plants, your bookshelf, or even your leg! But only your leg if you sat realllly still for like, a few months. And I'm sure you'd notice at some point in that time. Anyway- this plant can grow up to 8m long - good job you can train it to climb where you want - and its leaves can get up to 20cm long too. Just treat it right and you'll have a truly attention-grabbing statement plant.

Scientific Name
Tetrastigma voinierianum (plant with four stigma, Voinier's species)

You may sometimes see the synonym Vitis voinieriana, but T. voinierianum is the accepted name.

Common Name
Chestnut Vine, Giant Grape Ivy, Lizard Plant, Lizard Vine, Wild Grape

Origin
Native to Southeast Asia, especially Laos and Vietnam

Light
This plant will do well in bright filtered or indirect light; harsh sun can scorch its leaves so if it gets any direct sun, make sure it's in the morning or evening.

Water
Keep the soil moist by watering only when the top third of the soil has dried; water less in winter.

Humidity
Used to a rainforest environment, this plant will appreciate above-average humidity. Using a pebble tray is a good idea if you notice its leaves getting brown and crispy on the edges.

Soil
Use a well-draining soil which will retain some moisture. Elements like sand and grit will help it drain while coir, perlite or bark will retain soil moisture.

Food
Feed every month or so in spring and summer, reduce feeding over the autumn and winter dormancy.

Temperature
Average household temperatures of about 18-26°C are perfect- make sure it doesn't drop below 15°C in winter.

Pet-safe
No, this plant can be toxic to pets and small humans; steer clear if you are allergic to latex.

Sprouts Top Tips
When you first take the plant home, it may drop leaves in protest at the move; don't worry too much, it'll just take time to settle in!
